It's International Book Giving Day (#bookgivingday) on Sunday 14 February. The day was founded to encourage children to read and to give free books to children who don't have them so we thought we'd ask..

What's your favourite children's book?

It could be one you've read to your kids recently or that you read when you were little.

I think my current favourite book to read to my children is Aliens Love Underpants!

My favourite when I was little was the Worst Witch

The snow goose, followed by The very hungry caterpillar.

edit - I should point out I don't have children, these are my favourite childrens' books. My nephew got the very hungry caterpillar for his 2nd birthday :D and my brother and sister-in-law had to read it to him every night for months :p

My five year old is enjoying me reading Enid Blytons "Wishing Chair" books to her at the moment. I've also got the "Faraway Tree" books to look forward to reading again. I admit to having bought a boxed set of "Famous Five" books when she was still in her pram, though my Mum still has the ones she had as a child and which I read decades ago. The language is very dated, as are the gender roles and household scenarios, but the actual stories are still as enthralling as I remember.

My youngest absolutely loved Green Eggs & H am and Pass the jam Jim.
  • Where do I begin?!

    The Secret Garden

    Black Beauty

Enid Blyton books - too many to choose a favourite

    Sweet Frannie

Jan Needle - another good author with several books worth reading

    The Kevin and Sadie series

    Aesop's fables

I could list several others, but you'd be reading my post for a long time!

Both my sons prefer non-fiction. The younger one enjoys books about war, transport, and biographies. My older son has learning difficulties, but can usually be found with a book about animals (his favourite varies from week to week), and a pad and pen so that he can write endless lists.

My daughter's favourite books were 'Where's Spot?' and ''Alfie's Feet'. She has already introduced both books to her daughter, who is almost thirteen months old.
  • Matilda has been my favourite all my life.
    Also love Enid Blyton.

    For reading out loud:

Three Billy Goats Gruff (Ladybird version!)
Most of the other classic Ladybird 'fairytales'
    The Gruffalo
    The Very Hungry Caterpillar
    Aliens Love Underpants

The ones I enjoyed reading myself as a child:

Enid Blyton (especially the Famous Five)
    Willard Price's 'Adventure' series
    'My Friend Flicka' trilogy

Actually, I could be here all day if I were to list all of my favourites!
