Tenth Anniversary I've been Money Tipped!
edited 19 May 2015 at 4:38PM in Old style MoneySaving
I'm really pleased - I used to cut my hair when it was long, but since I've gone short, I've been to a hairdresser.

It's short, unforgiving short - but not so short that I can use a razor/trimmer. I really need to get it cut every 6-8 weeks. When I've gone for a cheaper cut - wasn't happy. Otherwise I'm spending 40-50 Euro a go - which is a lot for me. There was a slight blunder at the back, but I doubt anyone else will really notice, maybe if they're walking behind me on a long corridor :D I got OH to straighten the bottom at the back - not that it was bad. I'm really pleased for a first attempt. I guess I can only get better with practice.

Any one else cut their own hair? My mother pretty much always cut hers so it never seemed odd to me. I've always hated going to the hairdresser - I just don't like the smells, chit chat, paying over hard earned cash - the whole lot! Feels like a win win.

:) I've started cutting my own hair in January this year. I wear mine short, and layered, and have Mum run a pair of clippers up the back with a Number 3 guard on when I visit every few weeks, and cut the bits I can see myself with small, sharp sewing scissors.

I have to say that it's surprisingly easy, and I'm getting a little better each time. As my hair seems to need trimming about every 3 weeks, I'm saving a fortune plus avoiding all the nuisances at the salon, which you described so exactly.

One of my rellies, a woman perfectly willing to say the most hurtful things if she feels they're true, remarked that my hair looked very nice (and she didn't know I was home-cutting it either).

    Hung up my suit!
I've cut my own hair for the past five years or so. It's so easy with clippers and depending on whether it's a hot or cold climate wherever I am I have it long or very short.

I must be doing it correctly as I've had complements !! :p

I have long hair which isn't layered or anything, and usually get OH/a friend to lop the bottom off. I also can't stand small talk/having my head on a cold hard sink/the smell of blowdrying hair...and it's so expensive for a trim! Ugh!

I've been cutting my own hair for about three years. It's medium length and layered. I have two doors facing each other so I hang a mirror on both so I can see the back. I just grab a clump between the fingers on my left hand and trim the ends with the right, using a big pair of dressmaking scissors. I hate all the false chitchat at the hairdressers, and don't like looking at my mush in the mirror for any length of time, plus they never cut it how I want it.

Been doing mine for years now, the more times you do it the easier it gets and you have the added advantage that any time day or night, summer or winter, dry or wet YOU can choose to do it without the hassle of getting sorted out, travelling miles and sitting waiting your turn. Also the money you save over a year more than pays for the bits you need to buy to start with then it is clear profit all the way :0)

Just though I'd redress the balance a bit: of all the things I'm prepared to cut back on for :money:, cutting my own hair isn't one of them.

I know that for my sort of hair (fine and kinky) it can look so much better with a proper, professional cut.

If I had money to burn I'd employ a hairdresser to blow dry it every day too.

    I hate the hairdressers!

Expensive for us girls, too much small talk, I never seem to have time, and I'm never happy with the outcome.

Bout time I took my fine, wavy, shoulder length hair into my own hands (Lol)

What equipment do you guys use?

I cut my own hair. But then I have always had hair that is below my bra strap.

I use to get my husband or mum to trim the ends. I do very occasionally go and have it cut properly.

My hair has loads of layers. I have seen this done this way on a few different sites.

I pull my hair in to a pony tail on the front of my head and cut it. Then I keep doing smaller and smaller pony tails until I run of hair LOL!!!!

No one has said it looks crap. So it must be ok.

I too hate the whole thing of booking and going to the salon and talking carp. I do have one place I can get my hair cut for £14 and you can just walk in.

When my hair was at its longest and I went to a expensive hairdressers as a model I had to stand up for them to cut my hair

I do the ponytail method as above. I've got pretty long hair though (when I start catching it in the car door, I know it's due a trim!). I did it as a laugh, OH thought it'd be a disaster, but it was so easy I've been doing it myself for the last 3.5 years! I did invest in a good pair of hairdressing scissors though, which I think helps.

I cut/shave OH's hair as well, so lots of money saved on hair maintenance in our household :)
  • I do my own short bob (DH helps with the back), DH's with the clippers and DS's with scissors (doesn't like the noise of the clippers). They both have a bit of curl which I think is a bit more forgiving - mine is dead straight, but I think it looks OK. DD won't let me near hers though - hers is dead straight too, and she remembers a few wonky fringes when she was little :rotfl:
I agree with what everyone says about not liking the hairdressers etc, and it must have saved us a fortune over the years :T
