Buttermilk what can I do with It....

I've recently started making my own butter with double cream. What can I do with the buttermilk I have left?

I have been making scones with it up to now but wondered what else I could make to use it up. :rolleyes:

Hi bootman,

I use buttermilk to make soda farls, there's a recipe herethat is similar to the one I use, but I don't add sugar. It's a traditional Irish recipe and we eat them with sausge bacon, eggs and potato bread.

Hi black-saturn,

Buttermilk is the residue left over from churning butter. It's quite bitter/sour and is an aquired taste. I buy it in tesco.

Followed Nigella Lawson's Buttermilk Birthday Cake receipe from "How to be a Domestic Goddess" for dd's 1st Birthday last year, and it was fantastic.

Try using www.recipezaar.com its an american website - buttermilk pie is good!
Buttermilk can be bought from any well known supermarket - I have got mine from tesco's, morrsions and waitrose.
The americans seem to use it more than we do, a lot of their cakes and cookies have it in.

Buttermilk Pie Recipe #56

1/2 cup butter or margarine, melted 1 1/2 cups sugar 3 tablespoons flour 3 eggs, beaten 1 pinch salt 1 teaspoon vanilla 1 cup buttermilk

Combine the ingredients in order: mix the butter with the sugar, add the flour and mix well; add the eggs and mix well add the salt, vanilla, and finally the buttermilk. Beat until smooth.
Put it in a deep dish pie shell and bake at 400F for 10 minutes, then reduce to 350F for 50-60 minutes.
Pie should turn a nice golden brown and a knife inserted should come out clean. I think it is absolutely best when it is just still warm. (Not too hot, or it will be like napalm.)

Buttermilk Dressing Yields: 3/4 cup

3 tablespoons extra-virgin olive oil 2 tablespoons lemon juice 5 tablespoons buttermilk 2 tablespoons parsley, coarsely chopped

In a small bowl, whisk together the olive oil and lemon juice. Whisk in the buttermilk and parsley.
The dressing will keep, covered, in the refrigerator for 3 days.
