    I've always used

    1 heaped tablespoon = 1oz flour
    1 rounded tablespoon = 1 oz sugar
1oz butter is about the size of a walnut.

If all else fails remember that cooking and baking are not often exact sciences and if you are a bit adrift with one of the ingredients the end result will probably be ok

    Good luck:D

1 heaped tbsp of flour weighs 1 oz approx -I've just checked;)

A packet of butter used to weigh 8 oz so it was easy to cut off the amount you needed. Now it weighs 250g which is just over 9 oz. You should be able to mark out an oz on it though.

My mum used to make all her cakes using a tbsp as a measure. She reckoned on a heaped tbsp per oz for flour and as heaped as you could manage for sugar.

Just wanted to say a big thankyou for the quick replies last night.

As DH was working last night I invited my new work firends over for dinner. This was the result of my bragging that you could have great food homemade that tasted better than marks and spencers!! (which is 4 doors down from my new office:eek: and yes I spent £28 on one carrier bag full first day at new office,:o not doing that again)

Couldn't believe it when my electronic scales wouldn't work last night. Discovered that I didn't have the confidence to make anything without them:o .

Clean plates at the end of dinner proved that I was right.:D

Dont need scales today...having a roast.

    Will be getting some tomorrow

    :easter:

I'm in the middle of weighing ingredients for a cake and the battery has gone on my scales - it'll only stay on for a couple of seconds.
I've still got the sugar and flour to add.
Is there any way I can gauge it without scales?
I'd already put in a big heaped tablespoon of flour so I don't know how much that was, and I need 6 ounces and 6 ounces of sugar.

    Hi Georgiababy,

There probably is a way but I don't know what it is.

I'll go now ane weigh out six ounces of flour and sugar to see what volume it is if that's any help.

Ok, 6oz of flour is equivalent (in my measuring jug) to 300mls, 10 fl oz, 1 and a quarter cups or half a pint. 6oz sugar is the same as 180mls, 6 fl oz, 3/4 of a cup or just over a quarter of a pint.

Thanks a lot. If you could also see what a tablespoon (piled to toppling) of flour weighs I'd appreciate it as I've already put that in.

Help! I need a rough idea of how to measure 5oz of red lentils - is around a heaped tablespoon around an ounce?

    Thanks for reading :j
