Should I spend gift voucher even though I cancelled contract?

This week's MoneySaver who wants advice asks...
I recently signed up to switch my broadband to a new provider after seeing a great deal advertised, which included £100 of vouchers for a ‘successfully connected contract’. Due to a number of mistakes - including money being taken from my bank account that I still haven't had back - I cancelled the order. Despite this I've just received the voucher. Should I spent it or send it back?

If they've sent you the gift cards before the contract started then that's their mistake. I'd treat them as compensation for the hastle you've had to endure.0

Absolutely, definitely, all of the above!!
Happy and prosperous New Year to everyone - many thanks for all the wonderful helpful tips from this lovely site..0 -
How do these vouchers work?
Would the broadband company in question be able to refuse to honour paying the shop where you spend them?
If they could, could the shop could be out of pocket?
If they couldn't it up to you morally how much of the £100 you think you are due in compensation.Debt of £6300 cleared in 5 years, now ZERO0 -

Contact the company - if they have the facility do it via 'online chat' that way you have a written record of what was said if you save the transcript.
Chances are they'll let you keep it as a goodwill gesture, but if not tell them they'll need to collect it from you at your convenience.
The last thing you want is to spend it and then get a letter in a few months time - 'It has come to our attention that...'0 -
Part 2 of the question:
You send a cheque for £100 to your broadband provider by mistake - you don't owe them any money. Should they keep the money and spend it or give it back?0 -
Tell us the name of the broadband provider !0

How much have they taken from your bank which you say you haven't had back yet.....make the most of it, we are only here for the weekend.

A voucher is not necessarily the same as real money - it's often a combination of deals between businesses.
The fact that they've sent you the voucher although you've cancelled your contract is just another sign of their incompetence. If it worries you, either hang onto it for a while before you spend it, or write to them asking what you should do with it and see if you get any response (probably you won't).0
