My PC has been crazy lately, I think its caused by XP updates.

It keeps giving me the blue screen with different error messages, the printer is acting up (not sure if thats connected), I had to keep doing a system restore, but it kept updating again automatically:mad: So I've turned auto updates off & system restored to some time in Apr 08.

I was thinking if I upgraded to Vista would it solve this?

I've also lost my sound again (for the second time:mad: ), months ago, would going to Vista sort this? Its def software, not the speakers.

How would I get Vista on this PC?
Do I buy a disk or take it to a PC person?
Will I loose everything on PC?

Thank you

Is this updating to service pack 3? Do you know what processor and mother board you've got? The update has some problems with certain processor/motherboards etc.

This is the thread when I started asking for help a couple of weeks ago

    http://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/showthread.html?t=915225

I was taken through some steps to tell people a bit more.

I did look in the add/remove programmes, I couldn't find one that said XP service pack 3. But I uninstalled two updates (that were installed yesterday) yesterday & when you start to remove them, you realise there is more than one thing in each update, but I didn't notice too much what they were.

To buy a "retail version of vista would cost you about £150 min, and as the machine may not have vista drivers available for some components you may be no better off.
Suggest if these problems are increasing it may be time to have some one look at it.
See if you can ask a techie friend to check for over heating and also do a full memory test using memcheck, any technically literate person will know how to do this, also consider doing a full backup of data and clean install of xp
How old is this machine and is it a laptop or desk top?

Its only a couple of years old (perhaps 3 years even)

It was quite hi spec, its the multi medial edition (can't remember exact cost, but a good bit over 500, but under 1k, but that was with a snazzy LCD screen upgrade.

Its OK, I lowered IE settings & I have a search box

A much better way to do this is to add the website to your "Trusted Sites" list - if you forget to raise the IE security settings again then your PC may be vulnerable.

Another possible way to fix your problens - which has worked for me in the past - is to go to the Windows Update website and have it scan your PC for updates. Once that is done you can look to see if there are any optional or hardware updates available. Try installing these - they probably won't be quite as up-to-date as those from the hardware manufacturer, but it may still resolve the problem.

Done that, I've read so much about moaning about the wondows updates, I though the general opinion was these are causing it?

I was having problems with logging on and loading windows recently.

When I installed SP3 it has resolved all these problems, to see your system go to Start> My Computer>View system information, that will tell you which service pack you have.

Installing SP3 was the start of my problems and I couldn't even boot up. Disabling the inteppm drivers in safe mode may be required before installing SP3 for some people who have AMD processors.

Hi, when you purchased the computer, did you receive a recovery/restore disc for the operating system or the XP installation disc?

Did you receive any other discs for installing the hardware i.e. graphics, sound and motherboard utility disc.

Yeah I do know some have had problems depending on the processor, I download SP3 without any problems and mine is running well and slightly better than before, if we can find out what system she is running it would be helpful.
