Options
i can just about use a sewing machine, got a new one for my birthday and decided to make some bags, some are just regular tote bags and others are jordy (square bottomed) bags, i made a few purses too, i'm still learning, but here's a few i've made so far. i'm planning to hopefully take them to local farmers market/summer fair etc and sell them. oooh i cant believe i actually made something!:D

They look really good - there might be hope for me yet (just struggling with my first machine.) How long did it take you?

Wow I love them! You should sell through ebay? Coming up to summer people will be looking for beach/swim bags? I'll need one for when I go to America no doubt - I'll need to give you a shout ;)

Wow, and double Wow, they are super great. What lovely fabric. I love the shape of the last bag, with the balloons, and lined and everything. Are you sure this is your first attempt. They look very professional.
  • I think these are great too, well done and I agree they do look very professional

  • aw thanks everyone, i spent ages trawling the internet looking for patterns, and got the patterns by searching for 'tote tutorial', this is actually my very first bag, but the photo makes it look all squint at the bottom!! obviously need to work on my photo displays better!

i was double checking everything the first time, so it prob took me nearly 3 hours, i was so careful measuring etc (so unlike me as usually i just rush rush rush!) but now i can whip one up start to finish in an hour, most of the time is measuring and cutting and ironing (i iron on interfacing to the fabric and handles to make it sturdier) and to keep things neater, and pinning etc.

i got the fabrics from the US, someone helpful on this site told me that if you keep the whole order under £18 then there are no customs fees or post office fees etc (and she was right!). i was thinking of ebay, my OH does a bit of web design so has offered to build me a website if i wish...so i'd best get sewing. i'm also going to get some kiddy fabric and make little bags for little uns! thanks for your great comments:D

Beautiful bags, definitely think about Ebay - I'd love one especially if you can choose from a range of fabrics.

I think you'd do a roaring trade - apart from everybody on here that wants one ;) - there's a demand for good reusable bags for shopping these days. For environmental reasons plastic bags are being gradually phased out (good thing too!) so strong quality bags with good funky designs (which these are) will be much sought after. Hope you can cope with the demand.... ;)

  • thanks, you've certainly boosted my confidence, my OH (who knows nowt about bags) was saying things at first like "they're a bit big aren;t they?" and "ooh i'm not sure if people will like bright bold colours/flowers", anyway his sisters liked them so i stopped listening to him. i'm getting a bit bag mad now, and whenever i'm out i'm always checking out what people are using to carry shopping in:L:L:L oh yes, i'll be making some makeup bags too, as the pattern is just like the purses but a bit bigger. aaah i think i know what all my friends and family will be getting for christmas this year!
