I would like to ask you, the buying public the following questions:

A: Do you want cashback deals to be banned?
B: Do you want cashback deals to not be as competitive but better regulated by the networks?
C: Do you want cashback deals to be as they are now, and are prepared to take the risks?

I am of the opinion of of B. It will give us a chance to compete, offering the customer a bespoke package, but with better guarantees and fairer terms and conditions.

The IMPDA whom is run by Mr Caudle, who's own company was set up in June 2006 and up until recently was offering cashback deals.

He has recently become a director of a company that is promoted on the IMPDA website, and has links to his website.

Letters have NOT gone out to all Independant Mobile Phone dealers, and we have not been advised as to the IMPDA's actions before they have taken place.

We have not had answers to our questions to Mr Caudle as follows:
Where advertising revenue will go from this associations website?
Why the only link to a mobile phone store is to his own website?
How long have you been in the industry?

I do not want to seem that i am washing dirty linen in public, but his actions could affect both customers and dealers.

Mr Caudle states that he wants the only offers to be available, are TV's, Ipods, Mp3's etc

If you ban cashbacks then ban everything should be banned, and that includes network direct offers as well.

Please let me know what you think.
  • Sirs, Please note that not all of us are bad dealers. I pride myself on honestly and very very good service to all my customers. I have been here for 15yrs and want to continue here for another 15yrs at least. I'm not giving my company name or address as I'm not here fro self promotion. I'm here to help where needed for free. Any questions please ask, and I'll do all I can to answer you.

As long as it's not Mobileshop that you own, then it's ok.
I hope MS are in Watchdog next week - not enough is being done to warn people of their dodgy business. I don't wait for my cashbacks from them anymore, I just take legal action the day payment is overdue.
  • No not any of them offering cashbacks...we dont do cashbacks or tv's or anything else. I have no problem with companies offering cashbacks, but they all should have clean T&C's, and the money offered should be gaurenteed, just like ABTA etc for holiday companies, in case they cease to trade some months later. The system should work if a secure fund was set up, much like a pension fund, but controlled by a 3rd party. I wish you well in your quest for money owed, but I cant be positive about you getting any sorry.

that's all very well, but ABTA is a sham and only there to stave off proper action and protect the companies and regulation and compensation schemes are not always the best way forward; sicne you mentioned pensions, many are bearing huge additional costs as a result of just that and so now final salary schemes are heading for extinction. Whilst that may protect a few people it will cost a fortune for the majority when they retire.
  • Your point is??

My "point" is that protection and compensation schemes often promis much and deliver little. The cashback schemes run on a percentage basis and that is pretty obvious to anyone with half a brain. Caveat emptor is fine by me - I want to maintain the CHOICE regarding risk-reward and not have it dictated by others. As costs increase for dealers deals will worsen - and that is already happening in many ways now. It is a trend I don't want to see taken too far.
  • I think the posting by alnsv1000s who is one of only 5-6 on a 400 dealer forum who in the past have not addressed the issue of cashbacks, and do not like the issue being raised by the IMPDA.

The post needs to be put into perspective for the benefit of the public and dealers.

The IMPDA represents it members AND those dealers who contact the impda who may not be members, we have never said we speak for every uk mobile phone dealer.

    He states
Mr Caudle states that he wants the only offers to be available, are TV's, Ipods, Mp3's etc
that was a suggestion at least we give dealers to intellegence to be able to come up with other ideas, obviously he does not read what was written.

The poster has been given answers and information time and again on his own forum so i am not going to waste everyones time repeating it and and some of them have posted on other forums as anoynmous because they think its clever, but shows how they are desperate to stop the campaign and still let the customer suffer. Suffic to say that there are a large number of extreamly good dealers out there who do the right thing regarding cashback, but even they will admit that the large number of companies that have gone bust do our industry no good at all, and the public is distrustful of dealers for this reason.

The networks have been very slow in sorting this issue. The public needs to be protected and dealers need to be trusted. We originally raised the issue of a cashback ban but if those misguided people would actually read what was written in total they would see that we are asking the networks to agree a meeting with dealers and distributors to sort this issue. Everyone needs to be involved in this not just networks.

It is unfortunatly a sign that the 5 or so dealers some of which have posted here, have to resort to trying to discredit our own companies because they have not got an answer and cannot support a move to clean up our industry for the good of the mobile industry and the public.

We applaud people like "Lovelyguy" and we need more like him, but people need to trust dealers. The networks have stepped back from really doing anything, and the little they have done are guidlines, please remember it is just that guidlines, people are not COMPELLED to adhear to it.

We are asking for something concrete not guidlines that will stop further customers being owed thousands by stupid deals, over complicated terms etc, which is why on BBC and podcast broadcasts we have asked the networks to arrange a meeting.

I would finally say to the public go to the IMPDA website and make your view known by voting on the poll

To the good dealers we would say, you dont deserve the mistrust of the public, and the networks should do more to stop those companies who are doing this practice. We will see what Ofcom and the networks come up with, it will be interesting to see what watchdog come up with. Dealers all over the country should be supporting a change to stop the situation happening again, even MP's are now behind a cashback call. If this can be regulated and strictly enforced then we would support that.

We would ask everyone to bear all this in mind before just taking the word of posters who are making comments as he has done, a member of 4-5 dealers out of over 400 on their forum.
