Hello everyone,
Welcome to the ninth Grocery Challenge of 2007.
I'm sorry that I'm posting this a bit early but I'm off on holiday and I won't be here next week to begin the Grocery challenge on the 28th as usual, so I'm putting it up now.
If your new month starts early feel free to join this thread, or if you're still working on your August budget, then keep on posting in the August Grocery Challenge.
As always this challenge is to reduce your own grocery budget to levels that you will be pleased with, not forgetting that we always recommend that you stay inside your own comfort levels and take things gently one step at a time.
If you are new to the challenge I have quoted the advice from Galtizz below which will help you get started.
Please post into this thread for help and advice and support at any time. Good luck to everyone taking part!
I hope it's a good month for everyone!

For the first month I took a guess at the budget but I really had no idea how much I was spending.
I found the best thing is to have a guess the first month but SAVE ALL OF YOUR RECEIPTS (and yes, that does include the ones from the local shop when you run out of milk ), then at the end of the month add them all up and have a look if you were on budget, if not, it doesn't matter because your budget was a guess. For the next month you can use the total of your receipts and take a bit off to get a realistic budget, just shave off as much as you think you can, it could be £1 a week or £20 a week.
If you are currently spending £200 a month don't suddenly drop it to £100 - you'll never do it but if you cut £20 a month off for a few months you'll get there eventually without feeling you're missing out on anything.
You might think you've done everything you can in the first month but someone always comes up with a new idea and, if you try it you often find you save a bit more (unless you are SarahSaver who is an expert at this and could only save more if she turned her back garden into a paddy field and lived on rice ) In the first month I thought, I'm planning meals, I couldn't possibly save any more, but then I started double cooking and freezing, and making soup instead of buying it in tins.
I've been doing this since Feb but only saved ALL of my receipts last month, it has given me a much better idea of where it is all going. Budget for next month is £80 for 2 of us, I'll start on 30/4. I could probably save more, by eating different foods but I can afford to live on £80, I have saved a lot of money since Feb. and I don't waste food or money any more. So I'm happy with my budget.
I hope it's a good month for everyone!

Thanks, Pink.
My pay day is tomorrow, so that's when my September budget is starting. As part of my energy conservation (and eventual money conservation), I'm going to do my shop on a Friday on the way home from work so it's just part of one car journey instead of 2. My first week will be posted tomorrow evening.
I've had a lot to pay out in August, so I'm determined to stick to a budget of £30 a week for just me and 2 cats.spendy/she/her ***DEBT-FREE DATE: 11 NOVEMBER 2022!*** Highest debt: £35k (2006) MY WINS: £3,541 CASH; £149 Specsavers voucher; free eye test; goody bag from Scottish Book Trust; tickets to Grand Designs Live; 2-year access to Feel Amazing App (worth £100); Home Improvement & Renovation Show tickets; £50 to spend on chocolate; Harlem Globetrotters tickets; Jesus Christ Superstar tickets + 2 t-shirts; Guardians of the Galaxy goody bag; Birmingham City v Barnsley FC tickets; Marillion tickets; Dancing on Ice tickets; Barnsley FC v Millwall tickets0 -

I dont understand how u people are doing this with the Budget as i observe the prices are going up. I noticed in the Tecso the price of Value eggs has increased from £1 to £1.19 and many such thgs, Wish me luck to be with in my £150 budget

Hi!
I'm new to *all* of this but eager to learn!
For September, I've allowed myself £160 for all food and washing / toiletries etc.
It seems like a small fortune as I have quickly read through what others are spending.
One small point of influence is that I have highly specialised dietary requirements but I would be so thrilled if I could reduce my outlay!
Nonetheless, I am inspired (thank you - all!) and whilst as my job terminates at the end of August (therein perhaps influencing my internet access - none at my new abode) you've given me a sense of hope, purpose and focus.
I hope I can come back with a success story!

Hi everyone,
I'm in again this month - I don't post very often, but just keeping a running total on my signature is helping me no end.
My budget for September is £400 - as I said last month, I'm not reducing the budget as anything left over is put into my mortgage pig. It feels like more of a challenge that way!Mortgage Free as of 03/07/2017 :beer:0 -

Hi all
I came in under budget last month (although, I am atributing this to my being away for a week). I am, therefore, reducing my budget to £150 but I expect to have money left as I have a full freezer and overfull (:o) cupboards.
I do not need to buy any toiletries or toilet rolls (although Makro has them at £7.49 inc vat for 36 and I may get them since I have to go there anyway). This does not include petrol or gas and electric.
I think one of my problems is that, fortunately, I don't 'need' to have a very strict budget.

p.s. My month starts on the 27th - OH's payday!0 -
Count me in, month started on 21st Aug.
Going to use cash only in a special purse and only buy what I need right! Just got back with some mini nan BOGOF- will do for kids when we go to a friends sun night and 2 double dips! Glad when children back at school!!
Anyhow how budgeted £50 each friday-bank day for shopping, but drew £50 on 21st as pay day and do not want to use card again, already spent £21.94!!!
But on hols next week so hope it will sort it all out.
Any thing left weekly will roll over to next week, but anything left in purse on next payday will be paid off mortgage, can you repay 2p!! I can live in hope.0 -
Hi
I am in again this month and am going to stick to £300 again. This time i am going to include most things as well. Tobacco and beer are in this month as i left them out for August. So although i was slightly under for last month i don't feel it was a true reflection of my spending so the £300 for Sept is a reduction as i am including more. Hope that is clear.
My month will run from 29th August(payday) until the 28th Sept.
Really enjoy this challenge. Well done

OK, first shop done - £13.97 including £3 on four duck legs (guess I'll be mostly eating duck this week then
), and some very cheap Tesco's own shampoo and conditioner... not very impressed with my Tesco at the mo though, the range of everything seems to be shrinking!
