Eating for one month on £60

Possible?
There are only two of us plus one cat who can only eat wet food (no teeth)
I am going to compile a list and I need your top tips on saving money on food!
We normally shop at sainsburys, which I find to be better value than Tesco. We do sometimes shop at Asda too.
No local Lidls/Aldi's/cheapy shops but I am going past some at the weekend so any good tips about what they have there would be appreciated!

Crikey! I don't reckon I could do a month on £60, that's not to say it can't be done.
I suppose lots of rice, potato and pasta dishes may help you achieve your goal. A bowl of soup and a couple of slices of bread makes a very cheap meal (homemade preferably).
Is this something you have to do, or just want to try for the fun of it?0 -

I definitely couldn't do it but I will keep an eye on this thread cos I'd love to see how you get on! Good luck :money:GOD BLESS DURAN DURAN

I think how easy it will be will depend on how well stocked your store cupboard and freezer are right nowworking on clearing the clutterDo I want the stuff or the space?0

Definitely stock up on huge bags of pasta, tinned tomatoes, beans, big bags of spuds (potatoes are probably the most versatile food known to man!), rice, and porridge oats (cheap breakfast).
Powdered milk works out cheaper than usual stuff
Freeze bread in bags of 2 slices so you make sure you don't waste any
Cut portion sizes (most folk eat more than they're supposed to anyway)
Bulk batch foods out with grated carrot / lentils / tinned beans etc...
Eat as vegetarian as you can - meat is expensive.
That's all I can think of at the minute, sorry0 -
Hi, Wow ! this sounds like a challenge indeed, thats a mere £15 a week. Is this all you have or do you have anything in your storecupboard/freezer at all to enhance things?0

I'm not doing it for fun, trust me!
We are trying to save some money somewhere because I might be switching jobs and needing to buy a used car. And if not just to put towards the credit card debt.
Our cupboards are pretty well stocked and I've been being a bit OS recently anyway, I make my own baked stuff like cakes and bread etc quite well.
I might have to do an inventory tonight!
I was thinking about the more veggie route - we are meat eaters but love veggie food. But I lack veggie inspiration!

wow, a tough one, as it works out as less than £1 each per day if you factor in the need to buy catfood. Good luck with the challenge!BCSC Member 70:j

It's probably do-able but it won't be easy. My tip would be to get to Tesco for one of the 3kg bags of pasta - they're about £1 and one of them lasted me (on my own) two months... and I eat a lot of pasta!
Eating lots of veggie meals will definitely keep the cost down - there's a thread on here with loads of ideas/ recipes... http://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/showthread.html?t=399846
Good luck and let us know how you get on!Debt@16.12.09 £10,362.38, now debt free as of 29.02.2012."I cannot make my days longer so I strive to make them better."0 -
I think if you meal plan well and utilise what you have, you could probably do it, but without the moggy.
I would suggest visiting a supermarket late in the evening and making the best of yellow stickered items. Make foods stretch with cheap beans or in season veg, make double and freeze.
Breakfasts:
Toast & Jam
Porridge
Pancakes
Lunches:
Leftovers from previous day/freezer
Baked Spuds & Beans
Soup & Bread
Egg on toast
Dinners:
Spagbol
Mac Cheese
Shepherds Pie
Stews
Toad In Hole
Sausage Cassarole
Omelette
Bubble & Squeak
Curry
Liver & Mash
Chilli Con Carne
Roast Dinner-use bones for soup and stretch for another meal
Fruit & Veg
Basic fruit juice
Frozen veg
Reduced fruit and veg-freeze turning fruit for smoothies
Free local fruit/veg (blackberries, nettles, rhubarb etc)
Loads more.

I think the cat is the big problem really.
She is a fussy at best and she can't eat dried food so its tins/pouches all the way. Helpfully Mr's grandma loves her and sends us food down regularly, so she gets a lot of treats from there! We are expecting a visit mid September so that might help us out there!
The litter should be ok, we buy the cheapy Tesco/Sainsbury value stuff at £1 a bag per week, so thats £4 for the month. I do wish she would poo outside though!0
