In my garden in April............

Options
Hello all! This thread follows on from In my garden in March........

New month - new thread. Hope that lots of you will come in and share your garden photos, and what's happening in *Your Garden* this month.

MSE053.jpg

Today we've finished planting the potatoes outside. I've sown some sweetcorn in the polytunnel in my hand-made newspaper pots. Will see how they work out.

The potatoes, peas and carrots in the polytunnel are sprouting. Garlic outside is up, but it's very patchy. Not been too impressed at the garlic bulbs from the garden centre this year. Seeds in pots are beginning to germinate, too.

DH is pulling out the last tree on our boundary in readiness for the new fencing. It's the biggest of the lot, but might be out today. If not, it's his top priority job.

Photos to follow............

I've been out in the garden this afternoon as well. Glorious weather - if a tad windy! I've had the polytunnel off to water the seeds that are sown in there (lettuce, spring onion, spinach, spinach beet, beetroot, radishes, sugarsnap peas) and my beans, but i don't think my beans have survived (a combination of broken stems and i sowed too early). ah well. hopefully some of the other stuff will grow.

most of all though its been a day of tidying up. There was a corner (like most people seem to have corners) full of accumulated garden stuff, including 2 (now not working) electric lawnmowers. i'm planning to get a strimmer anyway to cut the grass with (it can't really be called a lawn) so they'll be thrown out - not really worth freecycling. it all looks much tidier now, and i even have a little place to sit in the sun!

Photos to come later... right now i think i better go do some more digging - i've got raised beds to build!

    Mortgage-free Glee!
Harvested some of our purple sprouting broccoli and carrots for lunch.

We planted out some peas I had started off in some toilet rolls under a cloche. We also planted the seed potatoes in some containers and gave the rest away on freecycle.

We planted some cabbages, cauliflowers, beetroots, radish, leeks, salad leaves and onions I had started off.

We have herbs growing now under glass which are doing really well.

I have also ordered my materials to finish off the patio - all for delivery on Tuesday so I am off work from then and my b/f, brother and I will be laying slabs and sets to complete the patio all Easter weekend!

We have to pot up tomatoes this week and plant some peonies, poppies and penstemons (why all the p's!?!) among the flower border.

Can't wait to finish work on Monday for the week!

B/fs grass got a rake and cut, the beds got a feed and I have seeded the bare patches so that should help it out while we are staying at mine later this week.
:D Thanks to MSE, I am mortgage free!:D

well, this is an inspiring thread!
Today, we went out in the garden for the first time this year to do work (clay soil means we are a good month behind everyone else!)

We rotavated three beds and cut back loads of herbs.
Tomorrow I will be weeding and then we'll be off to get seeds to put in.

We are always late, but it just means that we are harvesting long after everyone else has finished their crop.

I'm looking forward to all your piccies. I forgot to take 'before' photos, but will try and get some this week as well. it's always lovely to look back through them on a 'I can't be bothered' day and realise how much you have achieved already!

one photo of some of the hard work from today... well two: before and after :D As you can see, the before pic (the first one, taken on 11-2-07) has a lot of garden tat and rubbish that has accumulated over the last couple years of halfheartedly starting to do something about it, then left..

    Hello all,

I too was out in the garden yesterday - would have ben a crime not to, I think!
We planted out 2 broad beans that had germinated indoors, and cloched them. We planted out loads of salad leaf seedlings - assorted lolla rossa, salad bowl, and so on. There's a cloche over some of them. Our garlic is doing really well and is pretty tall, and our onions all seem to have appeared now. Radishes are just sprouting, and in our mini greenhouse are two types of tomato, okra, mint, leek - all grown from seed. I've got some cabbage seedlings ondoors that I need to find something to do with. We also planted out our raspberry, redcurrant, gooseberry and grape, repotted a sage, put up the previous owners palm, and dug in some chicken poo.

We ache today, but feel very accomplished!

Got loads done yesterday, mainly sowing. I was enjoying myself so much I even decided not to go mountain biking in the afternoon which is unheard of for me (well it was only going to be a really short ride anyway). I bought a plastic growhouse to go on with until I get my proper greenhouse up, then it will be used as a greenhouse within a greenhouse to protect tom and chilli plants. So I did, in no particular order:

Made a watering stick for my second big strawberry pot out of plastic pipe.
Moved strawberry plants from small terracotta strawb pot (don't know why I thought it would be a good idea to put them in there) to larger strawberry pot with watering stick.
Sowed three types of toms for indoor germination
Sowed two types of cucumber for indoor germination
Sowed flowers: sweet pea, calendula, marigold, poached eggs and lobelia
Sowed herbs: Couple of types of basil, coriander, parsley and oregano
    Sowed Squash: Marrow and Butternut
    Sowed Beans: Borlotti
    Sowed Carrots in troughs
Moved Pak Choi and Beetroot seedlings out to growhouse

My growhouse is almost full now!

Also potted on some chilli plants which I'll keep indoors for the time being.

Will be spending Easter weekend trying to at least get a level base for the greenhouse to go on (OH can't wait - not). If I can find time in the evenings this week I'll try to do some weeding in the front jungle patch so I can site my new lemon thyme plants (lovely) and find somewhere to put my last autumn raspberry cane as its looking a bit forlorn all by itself in a pot.
