We've hit capacity again

The site's continued growth means we've hit capacity on the servers again. That's why you may find occassionally when you go to the forums there's a database error. In effect there are more users than the database can handle (how many times have we hit capacity before).
If it happens, rather than clicking refresh immediately, if you hold off for a minute, it should help, to give the database time to recover.
Yesterday I approved (gulp) some serious upgrades to the servers and new servers so we should be able to cope with the now ridiculously high levels of traffic.
The good news is its been worked as best as possible so the site stays fast, but then gives the error for a minute or two when we need to recover
. (Once alexa ranked this site as in the slowest 20%, its now in the fastest 20%)
We'll get back to the smooth service again soon.

Cool. Running a busy site can cost a small fortune. vBulletin is fairly good on resource usage from what I have seen but when a site gets very popular then even a poweerful server cannot take it and sometimes it needs 2 or more.- Matthew - Yep I'm new here

You get some good deals out that way although UK prices have dropped over the past few years and bandwidth allowances are starting to become better. You still get good deals on some good network providers out in the US though.- Matthew - Yep I'm new here

We used to have canadian servers, with very cheap bandwidth, but they were too remote and simply couldn't manage it properly. Now we send the email from canada for cheap bandwidth, but are servers are in an old MOD bunker and managed here.
To be fair the company is very good - but literally the servers can't cope. One of the big issues is 'search' when people search it has to work through 4 million posts - and this is a huge drain on the database. Many big forums turn off search for this reason, but i dont want to do that. So we're looking at a seperate search server.
Also we want to switch the default search on VB to 'a month' rather than 'all time' but can't find an easy way yet. If any VB gurus know how to do it without a hack that'd be great.
