You should be running a SQL query to do the search, something that looks like SELECT .... FROM .... WHERE .... LIKE %search%.
If you can post that query on the site, or PM me direct, i'll be able to let you know what you need to do.Smile and be happy, things can usually get worse!0 -
That MOD bunker DC is pretty cool. I have read up on that a while back.
One option is to increase the time between searches a little and also enable the image for guests where they have to type in a code to do a search (maybe you have this enabled already).
There is an option in the admin section of vB under the vBulletin Options > Message Searching Options where you can limit the result of a search to say 500 records but that would still query the whole DB to find the first 500 records. This might help a little bit with returning the results.
I have looked around and it seems modifying the code might be the only option to change the deafult to 1 month.- Matthew - Yep I'm new here

If you don't want to hack vbulletin, Manipulating the url seems to work:
http://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/search.html?do=process&searchdate=30&beforeafter=after&query=SEACRHTERM
e.g.http://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/search.html?do=process&searchdate=7&beforeafter=after&query=barclaycard
seems to search for barclaycard in the last 7 days (but I don't really know what I'm doing
Perhaps you could hide the main site search option from guests and just build a separate search box that uses the url above for guests. It might encourage people to join! I've joined a few sites because I know that full search options are available when logged in.0 -
...I've just notice on the vbulletin test board over on vbulletin.com the "Words to be Included Despite Character Limit"
Could we have mse, ntl, sky, bt etc in there?
I'm always telling people to use a * to search for those things which would bring up a lot of unecessary results.
(or does that not apply to 3.5?)0 -
I thought it was my computer. Cbeebies is slow too!:DMay all your dots fall silently to the ground.0

To be fair the company is very good - but literally the servers can't cope. One of the big issues is 'search' when people search it has to work through 4 million posts - and this is a huge drain on the database. Many big forums turn off search for this reason, but i dont want to do that. So we're looking at a seperate search server.
Also we want to switch the default search on VB to 'a month' rather than 'all time' but can't find an easy way yet. If any VB gurus know how to do it without a hack that'd be great.
Martin
// build search hash
$query = '';
$searchuser = $user;
$exactname = 1;
$starteronly = 0;
$forumchoice = $foruminfo;
$childforums = 1;
$titleonly = 0;
$showposts = 1;
$searchdate = 30;
$beforeafter = 'after';
$replyless = 0;
$replylimit = 0;
$searchthreadid = 0;
This appears twice so change it in both places.
Then Edit the 'navbar' template to change the Quick Search option-
Find the <!-- NAVBAR POPUP MENUS --> section and in the list of options like these:
<input type="hidden" name="do" value="process" />
<input type="hidden" name="quicksearch" value="1" />
<input type="hidden" name="childforums" value="1" />
<input type="hidden" name="exactname" value="1" />
Add
<input type="hidden" name="searchdate" value="30" />
as an extra option to pass search.php when it gets called.
Good luck0 -

I'm not sure that you can blame Martin for the speed of the Cbeebies website0 -

Maybe this is already done, but can some kind of archiving be done on posts? Can they then be seperated so that are searched on in the mian search window and maybe available to search on in a sererate area?
No idea if that works in principle though, you can tell I'm not a techie can't you? :rotfl:April 2021 Grocery Challenge 34.29 / 2500 -
