James from the information team - 0871 2089407

Not sure if this has been posted previously - I received a message on my landline answer phone today advising the following

'Hi this is James from the Information Team, this is our second attempt to contact you. You have a message awaiting your collection. To collect your message is simple just call us on 0871 2089407, Thanks'

James has a very posh english accent.

it sounded fishy, but I checked 1471 and the times were very close ans thelast number was from an estate agency who I am working with at the moment, so they have had a couple of m'pence!!!

It seems these 0871 numbers that are not regulated in the same way as the premium nubers, I assume They are working on the principal if enough peple call and no regulation and people wat long enough 'in a queue' the profits will soon add up.

Please be very careful with this scam.

Of course its very important to be wary of the dodgy calls above. And as a general rule, never reply to an 0871, 070 or 090 number unless you know who it is from and are aware of how much you'll pay (and how much they'll make!)

IF YOU ARE PLANNING TO REPLY TO THIS THREAD. It is crucial you read this legal note first.

  • Came home today and was left a message on the ans machine ..

" Hi this is James from the information team. This is the 2nd time we tried to call you. You have a message to retrieve. TO do so ring 0871 208 9407"

This is a recorded message and he left it twice. Any idea what this is all about?
  • I just called it and it rings once and then I get a dead tone. Seems like a waste of time :)

  • I have had this call endlessly, and decided pretty quickly that it's a scam - the number to dial will cost you money to ring, and 'James' leaves a message on my answerphone saying to get this message you must ring this number.... well hello, if the message is so important why not just leave it on the answerphone you are speaking on at the moment? Durr...

    To be ignored!

    :D
  • Thanks! MatthewN - I take it you're ringing from work :D

Luckily not :) I checked ofcom.org.uk before dialling and it says that call is up to 10p per min when dialling from BT and is in a non internet code range.

  • This has been mentioned on another thread in this forum, as well as on thisismoney.co.uk forums.

I tried ringing this number from my work phone a couple of days ago - you get a message saying all members of the 'Sales Team' are busy, but you will get put through to the Sales Team when one of them is free. After being on hold for about a minute listening to music, you get a message to say you are in position number 1 in the queue, and please keep holding. After about 5 minutes of being told I'm number 1 in the queue, I got fed up and hung up.

    Draw your own conclusions.

Lot of [xxxxxxxx] out there must have fallen for this one.
  • I just discovered this message on my work phone, and found this thread via google.

Just to add more information for google to pick up; the call came from 0871 2089406.

Here's a recording of the message if anyone's interested...
  • We had this message left - it's obviously a recording and will only play when it finds an answering machine on your end.

Does anyone know if it's worth reporting this to the authorities, and if so, to whom?

We called our local police and asked their advice, they said they didn't think it was a crime, not even deception, and that we'd be best to report it to trading standards.
