Tesco - do you reuse your carriers?

Options
Hello! Recently, Mr T started giving 1 "green point" for every carrier that you reuse. I've always reused my carriers (keep a stack in the back of my car) and use my Tesco points for deals, to pay for Alton Towers, hotels, English Heritage, etc.

I've now been having a look at how many others reuse carriers. I've been to 4 different Tescos recently, and seen no-one else doing it.

I've calculated that at 20 carriers a week, I get £10 of green points a year, which equates to £40 a year in deals. Thanks very much!

Please tell me I'm not alone! If you don't reuse, what are your reasons?

Many thanks, Penny. x

  • I reuse for environmental reasons, not for a point on my card! Thoguh i didn't see anyone reusing either. I just think supermarkets should charge per bag like they do in ireland, thatd soon stop people wasting them (well, some people at least).

and gotta ask.... 20 carriers a week?!? how much shopping do you do?

I reuse for environmental reasons as we shop at Morrisons and they offer no incentives re bags. We bought a large blue bag when we last went to Ikea and use that for the heavier stuff.

We do use some bags from supermarkets, particularly if the shop wasn't planned but we always reuse these at home either as bin liners or to take things backwards and forwards to work.

  • I actively refuse all carriers and take my own bags with me. I am also the proud owner of a chic shopper (see OS board for more details) One of the reasons for people not bothering to re-use their bags could be the checkout girls reluctance to give you the points for them. Only once since it has been introduced have the points been added on at the time. Every other time I have had to remind them:o It makes you feel such a cheapskate for asking and you get looks like "its only a couple of points - whats your problem?" But if they are advertising it then they should give it. In fact it has had the effect of helping to reduce the amount of shopping I do with them which is great. My main annoyance is that my main source of plastic bags into the house is through their home delivery schem:mad: Yes I give them back to the driver but there are far too many in the first place.

I was in Sainsbury's yesterday and the checkout operator started to pack my shopping into a bag. I asked her not to and I put my shopping into my trolly. The bag was left there. The shopper behind me went to use that bag and was told that he couldn't cos it was a 'used' bag - how mad is that?

I have reused my own bags for years now so the extra points are an easy bonus for me, subject to the vagaries of Tesco policy on this.

I have also experienced the cashier starting to pack in a carrier bag even when I am standing there with my own bags. They never offer to pack your first bag if it is your own I have just realised. I will be quicker off the mark next week and make a point of pointing my bag right in her reach and see what happens.

I re-use them when I remember, and keep a stash in my boot for those times.I am getting better at remembering.

I try to refuse bags in all other shops and just put whatever it is in my handbag- it's got space for a few extra things.

I re-use bags wherever I am...my handbag always has a plastic bag in it for any shopping, whether its food or anything else. I can't remember the last time I accepted a bag from anywhere.
(the bag I have with me is a Lidl one which cost 9p...so when it wears out, I pay for a new one)

I've started to reuse my carrier bags since Tesco brought in the "green points".:o However, I now realise how fickle I've been up until now. I have bought myself a hessian bag from the local butcher's shop which is now used religiously where ever I go. It might have taken a bribery campaign to kick start me, but I've seen the errors of my ways.

  • Don't know if they still have them but Asda were doing black fabricy reusable bags for about 70p, for the breast cancer awareness thing. Reusable, donation to charity, AND they're actually good bags :D Comfy to carry and actually stand up if you put them down (useful for those of us who walk/use public transport).

... Getting fed up of Boots though.. go in their regularly as it's opposite my work, and have to argue for no carrier bag *every* time. They don't understand the concept that i don't need a bag to carry two drinks 10 ft across the street!
  • I have never reused carriers, other than in my kitchen bin and then out with my rubbish.
I know this is not very green, but I do recycle as much as poss. I think biodegradeable bags are the future rather that getting us to reuse bags, that way those that are dumped mine included will not be a blot on the landscape.
    I had a plan..........its here somewhere.
