What's your daily routine ...

... and how does OS fit into it?

A thread elsewhere on MSE got me thinking about how on earth people find time to do stuff. I lead a life of constant mess and turmoil and I haven't even got a child to worry about!

My day starts at 6.45am - dogs out, WM on, glass of water and peel eyes open, half hour of exercise, shower, make lunch for OH, breakfast, iron clothes if absolutely necessary, at work for 8.30am.
Most days I'm home (shattered) by 6.30-7pm, but might get back at half 5 a couple of times a week, or be after 9 some nights. Dogs walked if I can, then I sling together some food, shove some laundry around half heartedly, shuffle some paperwork, scan some journals and check emails (and [STRIKE]waste time[/STRIKE] pick up handy hints on here) and then fall into bed. When I have a weekend free I spend it catching up on laundry, batch-cooking like a woman possessed so we don't find ourselves eating sh*te for lunches, and scrubbing the kitchen and loo. Things like breadmaking, vinegar window-washing and skipping around scattering soft fragrant handfuls of bicarbonate of soda just don't fit into my schedule!

How does anyone normal find time to wipe their skirting boards down, let alone have children? I think you're all mad/amazing ... can you tell me how you do it?

6am-ish - up, breakfast and cuppa, yell at son to get out of bed, make his flask while he’s in the shower.
7am-ish - son leaves for work, yell at daughter to get out of bed. Put washer on, have a coffee and cig while daughter’s in the shower.
7.30am-ish - yell at mr troo to get out of bed, log on to MSE.
8am-ish – mr and miss troo leave for work and school, put another load in the washer, I have another coffee while browsing then off for a shower.
    9.30am-ish leave for work.
Home by 3pm at the latest, it’s usually earlier and very occasionally a bit later.
I might make a cake, while it’s baking I’ll hoover round and dust, some days I clean out the animals.
I try to FLY half a room a day, I go to Moggins’ threads for inspiration (thanks M).
When I cook tea I make at least 4 times what I need and freeze the rest, when I have lazy days I know there’s always food in the freezer that’s ready to eat.
I clean the shower while I’m in it and swish round the sink and toilet every day so it’s never a big effort to clean the bathroom.
I try to iron as soon as the clothes are dry so I don’t have a big pile to wade through (doesn’t always work out like that, but mostly it does).
The kitchen is cleaned as I go so no effort there.
The kids are 15 and 16 so they have to sort their own rooms out – they usually don’t but that’s their problem, they have to sleep in the mess, not me :D
In between all of this I pop in here a few times a day – if I don’t I end up missing something and everyone’s always got a lot to say :rotfl:

  • 6.00am wake up get little boy out of bed (he's almost 2). Go downstairs, sort him some milk, change his nappy and get him dressed. Get myself ready and dressed.
6.45am sit down and have breakfast
7.15am leave house to drop little boy at nursery then drive to work
    8.30am arrive at work
4.30pm leave work and drive home, pick up little boy from nursery.
5.45pm arrive home, do all the usual stuff such as open post, empty dishwasher, tidy the mess from the morning rush, get son ready for bed and spend at bit of quality time
7pm cook, eat dinner and tidy up dinner things. Will usually do some housework as well as I prefer to spread this out during the evenings so I can spend weekends with my son
9pm shower and make sandwiches for next day
9.30pm browse MSE or watch a bit of telly
    10.30pm bed zzzzzzzzzzz

This is my routine Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday. I have Wednesdays off as well as the weekend. Gosh just realised my life is very dull! I do try to spend my days off doing things with my little man though.

For me it depends on the day as I work part time 2 1/2 days a week and the rest of the time I am a busy Mum to two aged 2 and 3.
On a Monday I am at home and its fairly relaxed:
7.30-9.15 kids awake, dressed and breakfasted and me showered
9.15 tidy kitchen devastation and get yeast going for bread
hang out washing that was put on timer night before
make packed lunch to take out
put bread on just as we leave
10.15 head out to kids swimming and stay out through lunch (packed)
2pm get home, LO down for sleep
    take bread out
    play with older one
4pm younger one up, go out of we are going out or have friends over or do errands
5.30pm -6.45pm - make tea for us all
get stuff in slow cooker for tomorrows tea
make something pie like for Wednesday tea
make all our lunches for tomorrow
6.45pm - 7.45pm kids bathed and to bed
7.45pm - 9pm - finish any of teas or lunches that still need making
    put away laundry
    tidy kitchen devasation
    tidy playroom
9pm collapse on heap on sofa, sorf for far too long
11.30pm drag myself to bed and read

    Tues and Weds
6.30 get up for work (Hubby gets kids up)
    7.30am get to work
12.20-1.40 get older one form preschool, go home for lunch, drop off to nursery, back to work
5.25pm leave work, collect kids form nursery, get home
6.10-6.45 kids play, watch TV or eat
6.45 onwards - same as last night except we have to eat our dinner too at some point

    Thurs
    6.30am up
    7.30am to work
12.30 leave work and collect from pre-school/nursery
rest of day same as Monday afternoon

Fri, Sat, Sun similar to Monday with the exception of not making 3 nights dinner in one go! There is a load of laundry most days and I do bread every day or two.
Friday morning is the gym and the weekly shop.
    Saturday morning is LO swimming
Sunday morning church (creche and sunday School means I sit in church in peace for half an hour - bliss!).
Thurs, Fri, Sat, Sun afternoons all free to go out and play or whatever.

And if reading that lot doesn't make you feel tired I don't know what will!
Its all one giant treadmill but I love it :)

  • Hi, I'm a newbie, but thought it would be nice to join in!

    My day runs like this.....

7am- out of bed, off to shower, tripping over DS2 (3) on the landing (he likes to get up early and lie outside our bedroom door. Perfectly happy, often goes to sleep again. Strange boy.) Get dressed, try to prod Mr Cupier (over 30) out of bed.
7.15 dress DS2 and DD (1), DS1 (5) dresses himself (just have to check jumper is right way out). Prod Mr Cupier again.
7.30 Downstairs for breakfast. Final prod for Mr Cupier and threat to drink his coffee if he's not downstairs super-quick. Usually works. Empty DW, put washing on, hang out last night's washing, wipe down kitchen, lunchboxes, bookbags, games kit, ten minutes reading for DS1.
    8.30 off to school
9.30 home again - DD insists on walking, which takes HOURS. Bit of hoovering or playing, hang out 2nd lot of washing, post, toddlers, shopping at market etc - depends on the day. Send Mr Cupier off to paid employment (he walks all the way to the study).
11.45 back to school to pick up DS2
    12.15 home again, lunch.
    1pm naps!
2pm DS2 up again - half an hour with Mummy on his own.
2.30 DD up. Off to school
    3pm DS1 out of school.
3.30 finally home. Drinks and snacks, clear lunchboxes, bookbags, notes from teacher etc. Break up incipient fight in playroom (repeat to fade...)
    5pm tea
5.30 clear kitchen (again) while children dash around garden with football.
6pm Mr Cupier emerges from paid employment in the study. More football.
    6.15, baths, stories, supper.
7pm all [children!] in bed. tidy up, ironing, letters, surfing, mending... the list goes on for ever.
10pm (aim) bed. 11pm (more likely) actually in bed.
sometime after midnight.... Mr Cupier gets off the Infernal Machine and comes to bed.

    Then we all start again.....
I think life (and particularly surfing!) just expands to fill the time you've got!

Also want to say this seems a lovely friendly board - I've been lurking for a while.

:hello: Hello & welcome. Its good you've taken the plunge to post as long as you realise how much time you'll be spending on here now :D

I'm reading this thread and wondering if I need to set my alarm earlier :o

I'm not a morning person so its a case of all up at 7.30am, all washed or showered, all eat breakfast & all out by 8.15am. :rotfl:

I finish work at either 5pm or 6pm and then have to pick up the girls if hubby is on a late shift. I'm usually home by 6.45pm at the very latest.

Thing is, I'm not an evening person either so the jobs dont get done then either :o

Hmmmmm, maybe an extra 30-40 mins in the morning would do the trick?
Sometimes it's important to work for that pot of gold...But other times it's essential to take time off and to make sure that your most important decision in the day simply consists of choosing which color to slide down on the rainbow...

Quackers I'm like you, not a morning person, rereading my thread - god I sound good! (I'm not!!!)
I often think if I got up half an hour earlier I could get more done without the kids tripping me up. Problem is my 3 year old always wakens up when he hears me moving around - defeats the purpose.

And yeah I am knackered in the evening. And I hate the fact that there is stuff to do after the kids are on bed. I just want to stop then.

    Sigh.

  • Thanks. Still getting to grips with the smilies! :D No good with quotes at all, yet.

30-40 mins earlier might do it - although I've tried that and can't find a way of getting out of the bedroom and into the bathroom without waking the boys (short of shinning down the drainpipe....) and just starting the whole process earlier.

Ah well, another evening lost to the OS board - came on here at 9pm 'for a quick look'. :o
