  • How is the Netgear router/modem connected to your main PC? Wirelessly or wired by network cable? It's better to connect by cable for any troubleshooting steps.

Have you run the Netgear setup wizard?

I have Windows XP on my laptop and the other PC is Mill 2000. I connect to main PC by cable.

here's what i do: unplug the USB adsl modem, go through the setup & then tried to connect to 192.168.0.1.

the connection just times out - unable to connect. the lights are on, the port number is lit up on the front, but as far as my computer is concerned it doesn't seem to exist (though a few packets have been passed back and forth when i look at the LAN connection properties).

i've gone through the dhcp setup, read everything in the resources & am totally unable to sort it.

When I had problems with my router, one of the first things was that I hadn't got the correct info in the Basic Settings even though I thought I had. It's worth double checking anyway if you haven't already.

If you run a firewall, check your trusted zone setting. If this is too high security it could be what's stopping the network from connecting up. Maybe as a check turn off your firewall then try to connect. If it works then you know you need to change the settings.

    Thanks all.

Phoned Netgear help.. The Safecom ADSL modem works great but I was told I don't have a 'Netgear FA311 10/100Mbps RJ-45 Ethernet Card/adaptor' or equivilent,so therefore it can not work until I install one.
Have no idea as to why Safecom works but this don't.
I have all the required lights showing on the Netgear modem/router.

Could I buy the following item to use instead of installing the above(which seems to involve alot of work)
    Belkin USB to Ethernet Adapter

    Thanks for your help

  • How is your main pc connected to your Netgear modem/router?

I think you are confusing the issue by having 2 modems. You can only use the Safecom to connect to the internet on your main pc. You cannot use it and the Netgear together. If you wish to retain the Safecom modem and then share its internet connection with your laptop, you would have to enable Internet Connection Sharing on the main pc and then fit either a wireless pci card or wireless usb dongle to it to allow your laptop wireless card to connect. Then your Netgear would be redundant.

If you want to keep the Netgear, then plug your phone line into it. The laptop will then connect to it wirelessly and hence to the internet. For your main pc to connect, it has to go via the Netgear. For that you need a network adaptor in the main pc. It's no hassle to fit one. Cost about a fiver, takes 2 minutes to fit, and works under Windows native drivers.

It's not that i have two modems that was the problem,i only wanted to use the wireless one but didn't know about the adopter not being installed. Thankfully the normal modem works until i pop out and buy what's needed.

As for the adopter,is it that easy to install or should i just buy the USB - adapter instead.

It's so nice knowing that the problem is easily fixed.

  • Try this. Three quid from ebuyer.

    Doddle to fit.

Don't forget the Cat5e patch cable to connect the NIC to the router.

  • When did you buy your pc? It's very unusual these days to not have a NIC fitted as either a pci or integrated in the motherboard.

You don't need to buy Netgear's network card, any cheapo network card will do - see Toxteth_OGrady's link. However I'm a bit confused because earlier you said that you connect the Netgear modem/router to your main PC by cable. This must be a Cat5e Ethernet cable, which means your PC already has a network card installed or has a network interface card (NIC) integrated into the motherboard and therefore there's no need to buy anything else. The Netgear modem/router comes supplied with a Ethernet cable - did you use this to connect to your PC?
