Dog purchased from private seller but died within a week - covered by SOGA?

My friends bought a pedigree puppy recently from a private seller - the dog cost about £500. Once they got him home they realised he was unwell, took him to the vet and was diagnosed with parvovirus. They then spent £2000 at the vet trying to save him but he died. As parvovirus has a incubation period of 5-7 days he must have been infected at the time of purchase. I think they have a case under Sale of Goods Act to get their money back + the consequential loss they suffered; after all they could not return the dog to the seller as he was too ill to travel and had to be isolated at the vet.
I have told them to lodge a Small Claim for all the money back. What'sthe consensus on whether this will succeed?

Most reputable breeders have a policy where you should take the puppy to a vet once it leaves the breeder to be completely checked over and if there are any problems, the breeder will take the puppy back and refund.
Has your friend actually spoken to the breeder and what did they say?Aug GC £63.23/£200, Total Savings £00 -
The purchase of a pet is covered by SOGA, however the issue of consequential loss would be difficult to argue unless the treatment had been agreed with the seller.Gone ... or have I?0

Most reputable breeders are concerned about their reputation and they'll replace your pup (if you allow them the time)
Don't go into it with a bad attitude, it might cost you.0 -
Did they have pet insurance in place at the time of purchase? This would cover treatment and outlay for the puppy (within the agreed limits of the policy)0

They often have an initial period of 14 days where illness isn't covered (for this exact reason). Essentially the first two weeks of the policy are unusable in my experience.0 -
Was it bought from an accredited breeder?
How old was the puppy when they bought it?
Did they see the puppy with its mother (and other puppies)?
Did it come with a breed certificate?
Had the puppy been vaccinated against parvovirus?
Although they may be able to get the initial cost back, I'm not sure they will be able to claim the £2000 vet bill back without taking it to the small claims court.Should've = Should HAVE (not 'of')
Would've = Would HAVE (not 'of')
No, I am not perfect, but yes I do judge people on their use of basic English language. If you didn't know the above, then learn it! (If English is your second language, then you are forgiven!)0 -
How old was the puppy?0

Pets are certainly covered under the SOGA just as a T-shirt or TV is.
Parvovirus - doesn't sound like reputable breeder to me.... was it a puppy farm?0 -
That's a bit 'ruff'.0
