Noah & the Raw Chicken Wing!

I just had to share ... just got home from Asda and decided to skin and freeze all the chicken wings so they remain fresh. Noah was already moping around the food bowl, and when I opened the pack he was straight around my legs. Before the chicken wing even got to his bowl he was purring loudly and is now devouring it!! I cannot believe it, he actually prefers it to stinky fishy cat food.

That's great Fire Fox! I think I might try your chicken wings idea as well.
I've just got back from Pets at Home getting Lily some more food. Got the Purely wet pouches and a big bag of the Pets at Home own brand dry kibble. She's already sniffing round the bags, here's hoping she enjoys it cos I spent a small fortune.trying to become a moneysaving student0 -
Go Noah...he may be an indoor boy but he still has the hunting instinct hey? I applaud your hard work in skinning the wings, and note your concerns regarding toxicity of skin etc. However, I have found that my local 'posh' butcher selling free range and organic chicken, often has a bag of wings that he will give me as off cuts.
Paddy is also very impressed with the quality of supplies from my Halal butcher and really enjoys a couple of taurine rich chicken hearts as a snack.
I am presently choosing a new kitchen floor and am taking the new cat diet into consideration!!0 -

I am absolutely blown away by the purring before he even got his paws on the wing! I have two (whoopsied) organic chickens in the freezer, so if they smell really fresh I'll hack the wings off before roasting the bird.
Halal meat is generally lower in chemicals, you can tell by the size of the chickens that they are not pumped full of growth hormone. :T We have loads of Halal butchers in Bradford, and I'm pretty sure my dad knows a decent one. As Noah only ate the two smallest bones I want to get my hands on some carcasses/ breastbones.
My kitchen floor needs washing, so that's my next task. Noah made several attempts to 'kidnap' the chicken wings .... and seemed to favour my expensive rug as a good dining room. :rolleyes:Declutterbug-in-progress.⭐️⭐️⭐️ ⭐️⭐️0 -
both my cat and my dog adore chicken wings.
however, poor fonzie (cat) only has his two fangs and the little teeth inbetween them, so it can take him quite a while to get through them. tons of him trying to pull it apart and knocking noises while is lifted up and dropped. I have to intervene every once in a while to open up the skin and to remove the meat a bit from the bone so it is more easily accessible to him. most of the time it can take him overnight to polish it off because he struggles so much.
meanwhile, the dog (amber) tends to gulp hers down in a few minutes and then sits and eyes the cat's.
and im stuck watching the two of them because the moment i were to turn my back, the poor kitty would lose his wing to the dog!
i think i might have some pics, ill see if i can upload them.0 -
aaawwww bless him, Noah is 1 lucky cat
do you know from what age you can give chicken wings?"I am an insomniac, so I was really excited when I was able to get a full night's sleep. I said to a friend, 'Just keep your fingers crossed that I get lucky again tonight!' Realizing what I said, I tried to correct it and said, 'No, I mean, I just hope that I get some tonight!' After that, I decided to shut up."0 -

I thought dogs and cats couldn't eat chicken bones or is this only after they are cooked.

That's what I like to hear - Noah's only going to get it if it smells really nice and fresh, but you're going to have it anyway :rotfl:
:rotfl: I wouldn't eat it if it stank, but I really don't want to end up giving Noah salmonella (though salmonella has been eradicated in UK stock I think?).Declutterbug-in-progress.⭐️⭐️⭐️ ⭐️⭐️0 -

They can eat any raw bones just as they would in the wild, cooked bones get much softer and splinter so never give anything cooked. It's recommended that you start with small bones so they get used to crunching them properly. Raw bones clean their teeth and provide essential minerals.Declutterbug-in-progress.⭐️⭐️⭐️ ⭐️⭐️0 -

This is written by a vet:
"What else can you feed your kitten? We strongly advocate feeding raw, soft bones 2-3 times each week. Not only are these entertaining for your kitten, they also clean their teeth and massage their gums. For young kittens, raw chicken wings, drumsticks and neck bones are ideal. Make sure you keep these frozen till ready to feed, as Salmonella (food poisoning) can occur if poor hygiene is practised."

Also written by a vet:
"While your kitten is young you should also introduce them to uncooked (very important) chicken wings so that they learn that these are real food. Feeding uncooked chicken wings a few times a week throughout life provides exercise for teeth and gums and helps to prevent dental disease."

By raw food enthusiasts:
"Raw Meaty Bones or whole prey can be introduced as early as 4-5 weeks of age. 5-6 week old kittens are well equipped with little scissor-like teeth and can often consume whole, adult mice! Smaller RMBs, such as chicken wings can be fed instead if you are squeamish, but by 10 weeks of age, healthy kittens should be consuming adult mice, rabbit kitts, small quail, chicks, etc. By providing growing kittens with a varied diet of whole prey from an early age, the nutritional content of the diet will be well balanced."

I would have thought a really tiny kitten won't even attempt the larger bones, just knaw the meat off which is safe. If their teeth and jaws are strong enough to crack the bone then they are strong enough to chew it.
