Speed trap over motorways- look out
I haven't been driving on motorways for a long time, as a regular thing, but the other day I saw something odd, usually I expect to see a van on the bridge overhead, but this time I saw a tripod, camera thing with no van. On my way back I saw the tripod from the other side of the bridge and I saw the van 15 m away from the tripod, parked so as to be out of sight from the motorway traffic.
So you have to look very carefully at bridges if you are speeding on a motorway. I suppose they will one day stop using the tripod, and attach the camera thing to the bridge railings...
Some thoughts on the tripod.... Does it fall foul of the guidelines that say the van must be clear to be seen (by the targetted traffic) and marked with reflective strips?
Thoughts on not using a tripod but attaching straight to the railings.... it might be legally argued this then becomes a permanent fixed camera, which has not had the proper authorisation.

May not have been a speed trap. It's more likely to have been an ANPR system that will alarm in the van parked nearby if the car registration plate the camera reads has a marker on it. Eg stolen etc0

Could also be the dvla checking Road Tax0

Don't know about any laws etc but this has been going on for years, sometimes it the tripod others it's the hand held radar and they radio through your details. It is usually the NPR camera that is out to check vehicles for tax and insurance or stolen vehicles.slowly going nuts at the world:T0

Was definately a "Think" road safety camera partnership van. Which to me means a speed check, maybe these vans are used for ANPR as you have suggested. But if it was not a speed check, then there was no need to hide the van, as all cars on the motorway have to travel under the bridge. They can't exactly turn around and go another way.0

From the South Wales checkyourspeed.org.uk safety camera website....
Are cameras hidden to catch drivers out?
No. Safety cameras are there to save lives and make the roads safer not to make money or catch motorists out. All fixed and mobile cameras comply with the Welsh Assembly Government (WAG) guidance on conspicuity and visibility (see document at bottom of page). There are camera signs on routes leading to camera sites giving drivers an extra opportunity to check they are driving at a safe and legal speed. Our aim is to encourage you to slow down - we hope that by seeing our cameras and signs you will adjust your speed throughout your journey.
Clearly not the case in this instance.0 -

Indeed, as long as both you and your vehicle are legal, nothing to worry about.;)0 -

Speed limits are posted for a reason. As yet I am unaware of any law forbidding breathing over a certain rate.Starting Debt: ~£20,000 01/01/2009. DFD: 20/11/2009 :j
