Summary analysis of the poll results now provided at the top of this post - I'll try and update it periodically as and when I have the time to do so
* As of 3pm on 13/10/06, there are 96 votes in this poll
* 76 of these are included in the following summary analysis.
* The remaining 20 are excluded from analysis for one of the following reasons:
1. not yet at the first cashback point (14 votes)
2. selected "other" but didn't provide further info (6)
SUMMARY ANALYSIS
Received all the cashback (77.6%)
This is made up of the following components:
received cash with no problems: 42/76 = 55.2%
received cash with some problems: 9/76 = 11.8%
received cash only after legal action: 8/76 = 10.5%
Lost some/all of the cashback (22.4%)
This is made up of the following components:
fell foul of the terms & conditions: 5/76 = 6.6%
retailer didn't honour the agreement: 12/76 = 15.8%
ALTERNATIVE ANALYSIS
If we rank each of the above 5 responses in order of how positive the outcome was and assign a score from 0-4 as follows:
0: lost cashback - retailer didn't honour the agreement
1: lost cashback - fell foul of T&Cs
2: received all the cashback only after legal action
3: received all the cashback with some problems
4: received all the cashback with no problems
We get an average "confidence" score of 2.84/4 or 71.1%.
What this means is that the "average" person is likely to find themselves in either category 2 or 3. i.e. you are likely to receive your money but it won't be without the odd problem and there is a (small) chance that you might even have to go as far as issuing court proceedings.
By my reckoning, the evidence on this forum seems to concur with the above mathematically based analysis.

I usually stay silent these days but some topics of conversation are simply too important to ignore.
I would like to give Ka7e full marks for her recent efforts to collate members' experiences of various cashback companies. However, I can't help but think that there's a better way of doing this. I hope Ka7e won't feel usurped by this thread...in a way, she has made a significant contribution to it by seeking to pool the collective experiences of the membership of MSE in the first place.
Basically, the larger the company, the larger the potential pool of disgruntled customers. Thus the raw poll counts in each of Ka7e's polls can be misleading in isolation.
If each company were to be given it's own (set of) polls, members could see both the positive and negative in the same thread and look at the PERCENTAGES for that company, which are arguably more important figures than absolute counts.
So here's my attempt at a fairly constructed poll, using the most commonly discussed retailer on these boards (OSPS) as a guinea pig. If it works well, I guess it could be extended to all cashback retailers (one thread per retailer).
To be perfectly honest, a means of gathering cashback retailer ratings from previous customers is something that I've been wanting to add to my site but lack of time has prevented me from implementing the necessary user registration system which is required to safeguard the facility from abuse...so I guess you could look on this as me using MSE's well-established member registration system for the same purpose in the meantime.
PLEASE NOTE: this poll will only work if you are totally honest with yourself. Please read all of the options carefully before placing your vote.
IMPORTANT: for this poll to work well, we need ALL OSPS customers to participate in this thread, not just those with an axe to grind. Please, no conspircay theories about OSPS stooges skewing the results...as it's one member one vote, there should be little chance of that happening if everyone with a previous or current experience of OSPS participates.
cheers,
RM

That's a good point you make there Michael.
I suspect that the polling mechanism on this site doesn't allow for people who wish to recast their vote. This is actually something that I intend to cater for when I eventually get around to implementing a ratings system for my site as every person should be entitled to change their mind (either for the better or for the worse). It also provides both a carrot and a stick for the retailers.

BUMP!...
Based on the length and number of OSPS cashback threads I'm certain that there are plenty of OSPS customers among the MSE community who have yet to cast their vote.
In the same way that a general election result is meaningless if the turnout is woefully low, the results of this poll will prove to be worthless unless the majority of MSE members eligible to cast their vote actually do so.
I would expect to see a vote count of somewhere nearer 100. Anything less simply wouldn't be representative of the OSPS customer base as a whole.
cheers,

I've received all cashbacks due with little/no problemsNever had a problem with cashback from them, always recieve a cheque within 10 days of submitting my claim.
I recieved a cheque today for £120 from them, i prefer OSPS to e2save, with e2save you are always put on hold for 20 mins plus.0 -
None of the above (post details of your situation in the thread)i'm one of those who ticked the last box.
i'm unsure wether the OSPS is just a very badly managed & disorganised company with no idea what its doing OR they are deliberatly trying to rip me off.
my first cashback claim took 4 months from the date i sent it, i had to chase many times.
my second claim at month 8 seems to be going pear shaped. they have suddenly lost details of my contract/sale with them.
they say that my contract is 12months @ £9.99, BUT my sales invoice states 12 months @ 99p.
i have emailed a copy of the sales invoice to them & all has gone quiet now.
i've just about had it with them, most of the "helpline" staff are rude & unhelpful, they lose documents & dont seem to want to pay out.
what annoys me more is that i'm tied to Virgin for 18 months, if i cancel i have to pay the full whack. there must be a legal way around this, as i didnt buy the phone direct from Virgin, i'm tempted to go to court over this.0 -
I've received all cashbacks due with little/no problems£120 being the final cheque of three received today after a three week wait. I have now gone to coolnewmobile because they offerd a newer mobile on a 12 month free deal otherwise I would have stayed.
The OSPS sysem is manual and based on you sending them the right bits of paper at specified times. If you get it wrong you may/will loose out and thats the chance you take.0 -

*applauds JayC for honesty*
after the countless topics on this board the last couple of years where people have had it pointed out how through their own fault they have lost OSPS cashbacks...shame on them skewing the results0 -

Through no fault of my own I've lost some/all of my cashbackJust voted that I lost all of my cashback through no fault of my own. It was a long time ago, but still hurts! I had big problems, they tried to confirm the wrong deal, didn't send the phone on the Monday after a Sunday order & the Antrax scare held it up badly with royal mail. As for the cashback, I never got any details on it & when I emailed them (after say 6 months, they told me I'd missed the first part & never replied about the second). I know they are under new ownership, but... I would certainly use anyone else offering a similar deal.Certain OTT members have caused me to add this disclaimer: all advice given is free of charge & as such should be taken to be IIRC (as I don't spend hours researching all answers  )!0
