First Direct

Options
Hi

Anyone applied to 1st Direct that can shed some light on their processes? I'm trying to establish if they;

a) Credit Score you at time of application
b) Credit Score you when you return signed forms
c) Credit Score you when you apply, send forms then study forms and decide final decision at this point
d) Anything else!

I am a HSBC customer, have full Plus account with cgc and £200 o/d that i've never used to date. I then applied to 1st Direct last night as not too chuffed with HSBC taking away our interest rate - to date the following has happened with 1st Direct;
1st Direct - Will update people tomorrow when I ring at 9am scratching for answer...

Spoke to first direct, they have said they received my application for bank account & credit card. They asked for my formal authority to check HSBC systems otherwise i'd have to send statements in. I said sure, knock yourself out!

They told me that they will post forms; I should sign and then when they have my signature they will do checks and account should be opened within 7-10 days from then.

I guess this means they don't do any processing until they have the forms back, i.e. they've not credit searched me yet..... is this right or have they already accepted me then if they are posting the forms - anyone have any idea's how this works?

Will keep you all updated on progress over the next couple of weeks then, until I get a 'Sorry to let you know' letter!

    You can ask them if they've credit searched you; they happily told me. The 0800 242424 prospect line will, possibly, give you provisional overdraft and credit card limits (if you applied for either) before you even get the application form.

    However, until the application form's gone back don't expect anything. That said, I posted it off first class, then the next evening called up and asked after it, they said they'd received it and opened the account while I was on the phone. Very swish service.

    Doesn't it seem desperate to ring again, after i've done so earlier? Also, what would I say to them without sounding desperate?

    I did ok them to look into my HSBC accounts at their end to avoid statements - hoping that helped (or my B/S at least!)....

    So long as your HSBC account is run well that should be OK. They approved a loan for me on that basis, anyway (funnily enough, this came after HSBC declined me on the basis I run my accounts badly. Bloody shock to me, that was.)

    You can call them - it's unlikely they'll keep notes, or that you'll get the same person each time. Just ask if you've been credit searched yet. Or check CreditExpert for a definitive answer ;)

    Woah, just rung 1st Direct:

    Got the first account - £1500 o/d
    Got the CC with a £6400 limit

    I am gobsmacked!

    edit: they did say that they do checks when I return forms as nothing can be done until I sign the paperwork. I asked again, does that mean i'm preapproved and she said yes. Does this therefore mean they will credit check me again when I return forms or does it just mean the I.D checks etc?

    From my recent application, it seemed that they credit checked before the forms were sent out, but then did another once the forms were returned (both are recorded as Current Account) on Experian.

    If they accept you, they are bloody generous with the limits. When I first applied, many moons ago, the provisional limits they gave me included a £1800 CC. In hindsight, it's probably for the best that they eventually declined me. ;)

    The £250 free overdraft is very, very handy btw. Keep your Direct Debit money in an e-saver or such and transfer it across when they go out on the day. Or just stooze it, either way.

    cheers for advice..... so you got declined after receiving paperwork? What then reapplied recently and got accpeted? surely they see who you work for and accept you though, as an employee you should get an account....

    Do you think I could still be declined then? Also, as the limit is over £3k would that mean I get the gold card lol :confused:

    Yeah I got the account and credit card (£500 o/d and £6,900 cc limit). But they did go through the whole rigmarole of contacting HR department, phoning me through switchboard at work to prove I work there I guess. Might be more rigorous because I have a CIFAS flag on my credit reports due to some attempted fraud using my details.

    Similarly they confirmed the limits on the phone when I called in returning a message they left. Not a HSBC customer, but was returning to First Direct after a couple of years with RBS but moving back as FD are miles better.
