Calling All Virgin Media 2MB Broadband Customers - Very Cheap 10MB Upgrade

Here is the story. On Monday 2nd February 2009, Virgin Media have dropped new customers and current customers going onto there 2mb M Broadband tier. Its been dropped from point of sale.
What does this mean for current Virgin Media 2mb Broadband Customers?
Dont worry! If your on 2mb Broadband you can carry surfing normally without any loss of service or changes.
But, what Virgin Media have done is also drop the price of there 10mb Broadband and also a small decrease in 20mb.
Broadband M 2mb customers now will be able to get Broadband L 10mb for just an extra £3/£4 a month when they upgrade. This all obviously depends on your package with Virgin Media. But some digitalspy members are claiming it is saving them money because they have bundled packages.
Obviously if you dont use the internet very much then there would be no point. But if your a regular user then this may be of interest.
How I see it is that you can get an extra up to 8mb on top of your package for a few extra quid or even cheaper!
Hope this helps and let me know how you all get on!!!!

we have tv large and 2mb broadband for £22 a month
but we are hoping to upgrade to 10mb.
we are also seeking to have broadband upstairs
but was wondering how much extra virgin would charge us,
or would a router be fine?0 -
I believe, but might be wrong, that VM provide a free wireless router for all L and XL customers.0

yes they do, but you gotta ask for it.
They dont give without asking, i have been a V.M customer for 9 years, and there customer care is awful. They have started capping the download speeds , to certain times of the day, people are stating the best time to download is in the early hours...lol....... are virgin going to pay my electric bill for my computer being on all night? i think not.0 -

We have found the opposite. We are on on medium and without asking for a wireless router they sent us one, then another one, then another one....0 -
I'm not so sure it's as cheap as it seems...
A bit of background. I currently have 2Mb and M phone, which costs me £32 including a couple of phone features. I had Virgin TV in the bedroom, taking advantage of the old 3-for-30 deal. A year ago, I switched from the M TV pack, because I thought the service sucked, and I upgraded my main Sky contract to Sky HD+ and multiroom, which was a lot better deal than the Virgin box. (they offered me the XL TV pack for free to try to dissuade me).
I got a PS3 recently, so want to upgrade my broadband package - lots more downloading of game demos on the PS3 than I ever do on my two PCs
So back to the broadband point - I thought it would be about £3 to upgrade (2mb is £18... 10mb is £20, or £14 + £11 phone according to website).
Apparently not.
I just spoke to a VM rep, and he says it's a £7 cost to upgrade. I mentioned the web said £25 INCLUDING the phone, and he said that's not an option on his list (he was a very nice polite chap, so I hope that doesn't sound too harsh). I said I wasn't interested at £7. So he said he could offer me the Broadband L + phone + TV M (that's what I wanted, PLUS a TV box) for £10 LESS than my current bill in the first month, and £3 LESS per month thereafter. He knew I already had a disconnected TV box which they never collected after I cancelled it. He continued, saying they officially have to send me a new tv box, and I have to call to get it registered (but then I can disconnect it again if I want), and then my broadband will go up to 10mb, and I save £3 a month, for at least 12 months, and then continuing as long as I don't change the package.
Oh, and I asked about the wireless router, and he said he could only give those to new customers. I already have a full wireless setup, so not really something I was going to push.
So, a couple of things I learned:
Don't always believe what the VM website offers. I've not actually tried ordering via the website (I stopped when it asked me for installation dates, and to sign all the agreements before it even confirmed the price - very dodgy). It does seem at odds with the reps on the customer care line.
If, when you're on the phone to them, you sound reluctant, or mention other companies, Virgin will usually offer an incentive for you to stay with them. In my case, I got a free TV box (which I won't use) and it works out as a better deal than I expected. I was prepared to pay £2-3 a month more for faster broadband, and I end up paying £3 less.:j
Maybe others get different results from different reps, but I'm happy with the deal I got, even if it was a backdoor way of doing it.0 -
Anyone know when this will be rolled out? Im currently on 2mb and have had the email to say the upgrade is happening, but it doesnt say when??0
-
this is supposed to be rolled out in May 2009 - some areas already have it, but not me as yet...0
-
free wireless routers are only given when installing bb on L or XL .. not when just upgrading0
