Hi Reverbe
What a bummer! Such a disappointment - not just a job, but a promising-looking one too...... ..and, by the sound of it, you left another job to get it. That is VERY soon after starting the job - I'm not up on these things as to whether there would be any chance of compensation for misrepresentation or summat? Taken on under false pretences type stuff? Losing a job one has had for a while - well things have changed in the firm since then. But to lose one that one has only just started - surely they should have had some inkling whether the job would last at least a whiles when they took you on? Because of them you have deliberately given up a safe/r job and the job lasted two seconds.....I do hope that you are entitled to something. Even if you're not - I would have thought they could at least dish out a "goodwill gesture" payment. I'm presuming this is a redundancy - of the distinctly unexpected variety. It seems odd to just leave an ansafone message for you - cowards way out. Has anyone else been affected? I guess its a question of taking the chance of asking whats what when you go into the place to pick up your belongings. You do need a letter stating its a redundancy - to make it plain to the D.W.P. that this was a redundancy - and not a case of you resigning (so that you get benefit right away - rather than a disqualification period applied).
So I guess thats plan of action for today:
1. Go into the place - joint purpose: fetch belongings and quiz management as to the circumstances of the job going so fast and arrange to receive a suitable redundancy letter (a good idea if possible - even if its not a redundancy).
2. Cup of coffee somewhere nice.
3. Hit the job agencies and JobCentre.
4. Register for unemployment benefit (think its possible to register on line now - rather than having to visit the place in person? - things have changed since I was unemployed years ago).
5. Cook yourself a nice meal and have relaxing night in - or get husband/boyfriend if applicable to dish out the sympathy and a nice meal out.
FOLLOWING DAY;
1. Make a list of places to apply to on spec.
2. Do out those applications and hand-deliver them if possible.
3. Go for long walk somewhere nice in countryside or seaside.0 -

Dreadful today I have to say. Just started the best job I have ever had with a lovely large company which has great prospects and they offered me a pay increase cos I impressed them so much. This is only halfway through my second week while I am still in training effectively. Today there was a message on my answer phone when I came home from work. I won't be required. 2 days before the Xmas Party I was invited to and felt a part of the XX company family. I had already bought some costume jewellery and a wrap to jazz up an old dress cos it was black tie too.
That is just dreadful! Are you 100% certain that it wasn't a hoax call by a jealous colleague or something? Doing something like that by text is not something a large company would normally do!? (Can you imagine the headlines)!
MarionWhen life hands you lemons, ask for tequilla and salt and give me a call!!!0 -

I really don't know what I am going to do to keep myself going as I won't get benefits. What Would Bill Buchanan Do?0 -
Reverbe - I have only just read this so sorry if it is advice too late.(past 9am)
GO TO WORK ANYWAY!!!!!! Retired lady might be right. It is a very odd way for a large company to behave. Either way, pretending you didn't get the message and speaking to someone face to face and finding out the details is the way I would go with something like this0 -
Thank you everyone. I am very touched. You have all set me off again.
I think the lowest point was last night when I texted my friend in Stoke the only person I have in my life and all I really wanted was for them to sympathise and tell me that I had some value and they couldn't even reply. It is so lovely this morning to see that there are some nice people out there.

I have been asked not to go in.But I am disgusted that this could have been solved by a 10 min face to face discussion rather than a behind my back termination. This is not the intergrity this company prides itself on. Also the guy who made the decision was my supposed line manager. I met this chap only twice - one yesterday and once last week and the man has not said but 10 words or so to me.He certainly does not even see how I am coping at work cos he works in another branch. What Would Bill Buchanan Do?0
