If you want a basic, fully functioning laptop with a large screen,
hard disk, a DVD optical drive, and a proper keyboard - shortlist microdirect.co.uk
11/7/08 - received e-mail offering this Acer for £266 inc VAT
12/7 site says in stock; delivery to London, 3day from £2.99:
Acer Extensa 5220 101G08MiNotebook
1024MB 80GB 15.4 WXGA DVD SM
Vista Home Basic
1GB RAM (max 2GB).
Wireless and LAN0 -
In the end I went for the Acer Aspire 520G:
http://www.play.com/PC/PCs/4-/3477717/-/Product.html
This is the same as the Acer Aspire 5920 but with double hard drive space, dedicated graphics card and hd-dvd drive.
It is £450 so outside of the scope of this article but for the extra features it was well worth the extra £70 to me. The dedicated graphics card in particular means that playing games and editing photos/video will be feasible.0 -
Can anyone recommend a smallish/lightweight decent spec laptop with a 3 year guarantee for £500 to £750?0

The laptopsdirect.co.uk site is usefull because you can select by a price band
and then compare your shortlist.
I have just bought the Asus Santa Rosa suggested by Martin from ebuyer.
This notebook is not for sale at this price anywhere else but at £399 it looks a bargain.
I am not a gamer, so the portability without the disadvantages of the very small
Asus 900/901, is a good compromise.0 -
Misco have a Fujitsu Siemens laptop on offer with the following spec:
Fujitsu Siemens ESPRIMO Mobile V5535- Intel Pentium Dual Core T2330 / 1.6GHz
- 2GB RAM
- 160GB Hard rive
- Integrated DVDRW (+R double layer) / DVD-RAM
- Microsoft Windows Vista Home Premium
It's only £329.99 - a little more than in Martin's orginal post however a much better spec.
Have orderd one myself.
BTW - If you go via Quidco they also offer 4% cashback!:j
If you want 2gb RAM, this link, thanks a lot for it, is the way to go.

Try looking at dell business laptops: £169+
http://www1.euro.dell.com/content/products/productdetails.aspx?c=uk&cs=ukbsdt1&id=vostronb_1000&l=en&s=bsd
These are buisness class laptops ie. they are alloy not plastic.
The keyboards have a membrane underneath to protect it from spills.
They do not come full up with useless crap software like Microsoft works.
I have one and it is great.
I have no affiliation with Dell what-so-ever.

Looks like a good price! Is there any way to get an extended guarantee on this laptop? With laptops I know how expensive they are to repair and would be happy to pay extra to extend my peace of mind to 3 years...0 -
I'm looking for a laptop under £400 with a 17" screen, at least 2GB memory, and a decent speed dual-core processor. Having looked around, this is the best I've found (Toshiba L320D-12M).
http://www.laskys.com/pcs_and_laptops/laptops_and_pdas/laptops/toshiba_satellite_l350d_12m.html
17" TFT screen, AMD Athlon 64 x2 1.9GHz dual core procesor, 2GB ram (expandable to 4GB which I would do), and a 120GB Hard Drive. It's a replacement for my desktop machine, so I'm not bothered about weight as it won't get taken out the house very often. At £389, it's cheaper than Play.com and Amazon too.
I know the Acer machine is only £299 but it only has 1GB of memory, an 80GB Hard Drive, and most people in the know that I've spoken to rate Toshiba laptops very highly.
Anyone got one and able to comment, or can anyone recommend a better 17" laptop for the money?0 -
I've just bought myself one of these, is lightweight and portable, not the best amount of RAM for vista but I've managed to get an extra gig of from for a tennner on ebay.

- Genuine Windows Vista (R) Home Premium
- 1 GB Memory
- 120 GB Hard Drive
- 13.3" Screen
- DVD SuperMulti Drive
- 4 USB Connections
- Wireless Enabled
- Weight 2.32 kg
