I'm pleased to say that, having emailed the CEO sanjiv.ahuja@orange.co.uk <sanjiv.ahuja@orange.co.uk> and his office executive.office@orange.co.uk <executive.office@orange.co.uk> late on wednesday night, by 1pm I had my free Freephone calls restored. I contacted customer relations who confirmed that I had the Freephone Non-calling card bundle applied to my Your Plan 120 (£15 per month) account, this as I was still receiving the message informing me of the charge. A few hours later even that was removed. I'm happy, my world is again Orange :)

Yes they do at the moment, but Onetel have just decided to abandon their Freephone overide service and replace it with 0207 access due to the fact that calls would cost 10p a minute more, not realising that some people would still have freephone bundles..

Hmmmmmmm but surely the freephone numbers arn't just for people with mobile phones. With 1899/18866 non BT customers/NTL etc landlines are given the freephone number to use as ringing the 0207 number would still be chargable from landline and therefore defeat the objective.

People on BT can use CPS (carrier pre select) which made the need to have a 'phonepal' box on your wall as onetel refered to it which dials the override service automatically before you make a call defunct. CPS routes calls at your local switch using the override provider you go with, removing the need for override dialler boxes.

Since NTL and other non BT providers don't have the facility to support CPS thats why the freephone override numbers were provided, so those customers could still benefit from cheaper calls.

I think it was people from orange latching on to the freephone number prefix after it was introduced for landlines and not the other way round. So I can't see why 1899/18866 would get rid of the freephone prefix,. Plus I can't see Onetel removing it just because orange has stopped free freephone calls as what about all the non BT landline customers?

    1899 states the following>>

" specially for all NTL, Telewest, other non-BT landline and mobile customers! Due to great demand you can now also benefit from cheap 1899-rates via our dedicated freephone number 0808 1 708 708 *! Mobile users can also use our local rate access number 02081 804 804 *"

They seem to suggest mobile users to ring the 0208 number. The 0808 number for landlines. Even in my introduction number they suggested mobiles ring the 0208 number. As I was with orange the 0808 number got used ;)

Anyone deciding who to choose for mobile overide between 1899, 18866 and 18185 who are all the same company. There deals change regulary. Pick who offers you the best deal for your calling pattern At the moment>>

    1899 charges 3p connection and
    UK fixed lines 0.5
    UK mobiles (sat/sun) 3
    UK mobiles (weekdays) 10
    UK (070 Personal) 15
    UK (0845 Local) 4
    UK (0870 National) 7

    18866 charges 3p connection and
    UK fixed lines 1
    UK mobiles (sat/sun) 4
    UK mobiles (weekdays) 14
    UK (070 Personal) 20
    UK (0845 Local) 4
    UK (0870 National) 9

    18185 charges 4p connection and
    UK Fixed 1
    UK mobiles (sat/sun) 2
    UK mobiles (weekdays) 10
    0845 Local (sat/sun) 1
    0845 Local (weekdays) 3
    0870 National (sat/sun) 2
    0870 National (weekdays) 4
    070 Personal 25

Im subscribed to all 3, and go with whoever gives me the cheapest rate for who im calling. As I generally ring landlines to save my free minutes for mobiles I use 1899 at the moment, only 3p connection and 0.5p per minute (it was 3p connection and FREE landline calls last month! but they increased the prices  still their the cheapest i can find)

    Hope this helps?!

My posting that you quote has nothing to do with calls from landlines! Its in a mobile thread, discussing freephone access from mobiles.

Yes Cable Landline Customers are catered for by Onetel who use the smartbox fitted with a 0800 number that auto dials it to override Cable Network, enabling cheaper calls.Cable companies have not blocked the access number so far,so their hasnt been a problem with this method of using 0800 access over a landline, for the providers who use this method. You will notice however that most major providers are not interested in delivering calls for cable customers eg Talk Talk,Tele 2,etc and steer well clear of it!

However back to mobiles. Onetel had a running battle with Orange continually charging for calls to their 0800 access numbers, and Onetel had to continually change the 0800 number to keep one step ahead. As Orange are now charging for all 0800 calls(except for certain Charities,Emergency Numbers).Onetel have decided not to carry on,and are now offering an 020 number to Orange Customers,as they have always done to Customers of other networks.

I am not suggesting that 1899/18185/18866 will get rid of their 0808 access numbers .Because of course they are used by Cable as well as Orange Mobile Users.

However Orange do seem to be trying to raise revenue from all angles. They still monitor excessive amounts of traffic to certain numbers, and they do still bar free access to certain 0800 numbers used by alternative call carriers. So they could bar the access numbers to 1899/18185/18866 at the drop of a hat. This was the point i was trying to make.

I never actually compared callrates between onetel and 1899 family mobilegossip, was it cheaper?

Reading through Martins site he seemed to suggest 1899 family were the cheapest. So when I started using override trick around 6 months ago just went straight with them.

How much cheaper were onetel? Or was it more of an international call saving?

    :)

Tried to call an 0800 number and got the message, just got off the phone to Orange CS, before reading this thread, and they gave me some Correspondence Dept to write to :(

Can anyone on the ED50 tarrif tell me the best way to complain and get the Freephone numbers restored. Also how do we know they are not going to start charging the 0845/0870 numbers?

Maybe it's time to finally let the ED50 go.

    Cheers,
    Dutchie

    Evening,

I called up and asked for it to be put on my account as my mates on Everyday 50 have it and my account costs more per month. The call handler said the same old "all 0800 calls billed" crap.

I asked to speak to a manager and reitterated the story. She put the bundle on for a year no resistance at all.

Just I can't change tariff or upgrade my phone or lose it.. I will try my luck when my time comes to upgrade...
  • I had a long discussion with customer service a couple of weeks ago ending with someone ringing me back and telling me that I couldn't cancel my contract because according to the official info from their legal department "I don't have to make 0800 calls on my mobile" I was slightly taken aback as surely I don't HAVE to make any calls on my mobile but I choose to because that is why I have a mobile.

I then called back a week later and this time just asked the lady if I could have the freephone bundle added to my account as people I knew had had it added and I felt they were in breach of contract. I was quite shocked when she just said yes and added it there and then!

I think it depends a little on who you speak to. But keep trying. I'm on Everyday 50 and they let me have it in the end!

Business users on Business Plus or Corporate tariffs, or staff users on Liberate will now have the 0800 bundle added to their accounts for life from 1st December.

Got a bit panicky when I got the message from midnight on 1st, but the message stopped yesterday and Internal Customer Services confirmed to me that they've applied the bundle to all applicable accounts (a system problem stopped it straight away), and that this has also surpressed the "0800 charging" message. Also, anyone who's been charged from 1st Dec to 4th Dec should be refunded automatically.

Thank God for that! I use 900+ mins a month to 0800 for work in my shop calling dealer support etc etc. May not seem fair, but we do use them a lot for legitimate business purposes and 99% of us don't abuse the facility.

Not that any of you lot do *LOL*!!!

Gloat mode on though - We get 0845 and 0870 for 2p/min peak, 1p/min off peak :D
I spent 25 years in the mobile industry, from 1994 to 2019. Worked for indies as well as the big networks, in their stores also in contact centres. I also hold a degree in telecoms engineering so I like to think I know what I’m talking about 😂

But you can now access 0845/0870 using the Simply fone Access Numbers
07744 97 4116, 4333, 4404 etc etc out of your inclusive Orange x-net minutes. :rotfl:
