Not sure what you are getting at, but it seems to me that we are agreed that posts that contain what can be construed as medical advice are not welcome.

The reason I was so interested in this thread is that some users did not seem to accept the current policy, which I do, although being human I sometimes have not respected it, so I have made some posts that go against this policy and I was wrong to do so.

Now that this thread has allowed some debate on the matter, my humble opinion still is that the best way forward is to self-moderate, or we'll need a dozen BGs per board which would be utterly ridiculous.

This now has to be my last word to you on the matter.

I think you should take 2 aspirin and go and lie down:rotfl:

LOL this wasn't painful. Now DT debates can be quite bruising, but I shan't tell what I take for those, except to say that a bit of alcohol is involved. ;)

• I've just come across this discussion and i think its great!
The site has to take responsibility in law to be seen to protect its users, and yet it can't reasonably police every post offering opinion medical or otherwise.
Frankly, if someone posts that taking aspirin is a good idea, the reader who goes out and buys them has the ultimate responsibility when taking them. If they happen to be asthmatic, they should have read the warnings on the packet. You can't blame the council because someone at the bus-stop told you that volterol helps with toothache and then you find out you are allergic to diclofenac.
Bit of a waste of time trying to police 'advice' on here, as you can't stop it all. Demonstrated quite aptly by jack*.
Well Done!

I've already stated that I agree with the no medical advice rule but I must admit that I am still a bit confused by which posts should be allowed on which board.

My original query which sparked my interest in this is below here,

http://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/showthread.html?p=17194857#post17194857

As you can see I was not really asking for medical or drug advice and I'm still a bit frustrated that there isn't a health equivalent of MSE anywhere on the net. You can find out what people think about consumer products, insurance, the utility companies, holidays, supermarkets and all sorts of other things but it seems like there's no independent place where people can compare notes on health treatments.
• I reported at least two threads on the Disability & Dosh board as they were discussing medication, not as a last resort but as a first resort.

A doctor is the person who prescribes medication based on their knowledge of said medications and their patient. What suits little Johny age 5 will not suit big Johny age 50. Same with alternative medicines, check with your Dr not a chat forum.

Yes. It is. If you can't understand the post made by Glad concerning the scenario where someone talks about the bald patch on their head, then you more than likely cannot understand why in this case, giving an account of drug use is same as giving advice.

Particularly so if the account of drug use includes times used per day/dosage/etc.

read my sig maybe that will make it clearer for you or do you need bigger typing ?

Clearly you fail to understand that the Martin Lewis definition in this case is superior to the Oxford, Cambridge or any other dictionary definition.

If a post is against site rules, you should report it to abuse@moneysavingexpert.com. Please pretty please do NOT send a PM to the relevant Board Guide every single time you see a post you think is 'wrong' because some of us do try to have a life outside MSE, and abuse are paid to make the decisions and deal with it, while we're not.

However, I think it's worth saying that IMO it's inevitable that posts asking for what seems to be medical advice on the Health board are jumped on faster than they might be if they were posted elsewhere. When you're a BG, you get to know 'your' boards fairly well, you get a feel for what belongs there and what doesn't, what's acceptable and what's not, and - to the frustration of many users, I know - you tend to move threads which don't 'belong'.* I definitely DON'T read everything on the Health board, but I do TRY to make sure there's nothing with dangerous tendencies going on.

* Please don't start a debate about why any particular thread has or hasn't been moved, btw, we'll be here all night!

Well, I answered you there by pointing to one possible place for finding a patient support group, which TBH seems a better bet than a general place, at least IMO. I had a benign brain tumour a few years ago, and the best source of information was the specialised support group for 'my' kind of tumour, not the 'big' group which covers all kinds of brain tumours. But even so, one person's experience was hardly comparable with another's: I was asymptomatic, whereas others were quite severely affected.

I am really not sure how a general website comparing notes on health treatments COULD work: how you'd know whether the enthusiastic recommendations for a particular drug were really from a satisfied patient rather than a pharmaceutical rep pushing their particular drug, for example.

Yes, you were kind enough to answer my query Sue, so thank you. I hope that I don't sound churlish in complaining about the responses I got, it's just somewhat of a grey area on this site I think. Even now there are many posts on one board talking about what prescribed drugs they take. Anyway, I realise that that's probably not going to change by me moaning about it so I think that it's time for me to stop flogging that particular dead horse.

Firstly I wasn't asking about drug treatment, and as for the exercise programme and hoping to find a site or place where people could compare notes, well, I guess that you could say the same for this site. After all when people make recommendations for particular types of insurances, mortgages, investments and consumer goods we all just have to use our judgement on whether they are unbiased and reasonable and then decide what action to take. I was just looking for something along those lines regarding this programme. That's all I meant.

Thanks once again for the advice and the work that you do ( the judgement of Solomon comes to mind in your job;) )
