168mb??!!
Donnie I'm not saying anything
XP would run on half a gig but if your going to upgrade the RAM as you clearly need to, you may as well stick in what the standard is now...2gig, provided that your motherboard will take it.
belarc.com do a nice little download that will tell you exactly whats inside the case.0 -
XP will run on 64mb slowly but it does run. 128mb is the recomended minimum 2gb is the standard now because vista so resource intensive and needs huge amounts of memory. I receintly upgraded everything to a quad core cpu and 2GB of memory from a 2GHz P4 and 512mb and the performance is not that much better really. its all hype to get people to spend more than they need to.
And whoever was spouting off about windows 98 needing more than what is available !!!!!!, windows 98 would run happily on 16mb, 32mb would be very happy the performance really reached its peak with 64mb adding more than that didnt really give the performance increases than doubleing your memory would at lower levels0 -

Most of what you write may be true, but as to the Windows 98 statement.... I can assure you that when I was using Windows 98SE with 32MB, the HDD thrashing would drive me mad. Sticking a 128MB module in the made a world of difference. The difference between happily using the thing and wanting to throw it out of the window.0 -
As above, more RAM is bound to help you as a first step, but many people will also tell you to get rid of Norton, a notorious resource hog. There are free progs that do a great job and don't choke your computer.
To work out how much, and what type of, memory you can install (which you are capable of if you have 2 good hands and a screwdriver), goto https://www.crucial.com and dowload their program that helps identify your RAM. Hopefully it'll work for your computer. If not come back and ask...Go ahead and buy as much as your computer will take off them (they're not quite the cheapest but it's the simplest way!)

i am going to try pcpit stop ..... my computer takes up to 10 minutes from turning on until i can access anything, even solitaire!! .... totally cracks me up .....
3.32ghz
480 mb of RAM
windows XP
Thats NOT right!
I would suggest installing CCLEANER. Running the cleaning part (Top left) and then goto the STARTUP section so we can see whats loading up when you boot up
Also, what size hard drive is it and how much room is left?:idea:0 -
pcpitstop ..... avoid .... it does the scan and tells you a list of things that need done ......BUT you have to register and pay 29.99 dollars to fix them!
No it tells you how to fix most things for free.....you have to pay for the software to do it if you can't be arsed/don't know how......otherwise just go hunting on the internet how to fix the problems!
SO actually it gives you the option...pay or do it yourself....pretty good if you ask meIf you find yourself in a fair fight, then you have failed to plan properly
I've only ever been wrong once! and that was when I thought I was wrong but I was right0 -
I've just done a Crucial.com system check and it shows I have a 512mb memory installed plus an empty slot. If I buy an extra 512mb would it be as simple as opening up the box and clicking it into place in the empty slot?0

So long as the information is correct and there IS an empty slot then yes, it should be ok (Theoretically):idea:0
