Thanks Ferf1223, I did think about Circus Circus but the reviews I read said the hotel was very dated, also Excalibur doesn't sound too good either. I would really like to stay in a nice hotel with a good room and a view but there is so much choice I really don't know what to look at next.

I havenet stayed at the excalibur (showers only in rooms i think)

have stayed at both the Strat and CC. Rooms are much better at CC (in a tower, not manor lodge) and loads more for the kids. Location is much better to.

You wont get charged for the kids either but you will at NYNY.

BUT everyone definition of a "nice room with a view" is different.

What view do you want? and how nice do you want the room to be?

IMO the Strat wont give you either.

I see pebbles recomends the Orleans, I do to, as there is a bowling alley and cinema on site, BUT the rooms are prob not as good as the strat and certainly not as good as CC and the view would be mountains or back view of the strip.

Circus Circus is not a nice hotel-it's very noisy and attracts packs of kids roaming around (presumably whilst their parents are gambling)-it's also not that clean. By all means visit it for coasters but don't stay there ! My son had a great time there but was glad we weren't staying there. The Orleans has a better pool-better prices generally, better quality food, a 70 lane bowling centre and a multiplex cinema-as well as a nicer atmosphere. It's also quicker if you are going to rely on buses
to get to centre Strip with their free non stip shuttle -than use the Deuce (which you pay for). I've done both-I would NOT stay at Circus Circus but would definitely stay at the Orleans again. Gold Coast is OK but not as many facilities as the Orleans for kids. The renovated rooms are nicer than the Orleans rooms but smaller-personally space wins out over a flat screen telly for me and the Orleans rooms are massive with a seperate sitting area with sofa.
Saying Circis Circus rooms are nicer than MGM rooms is not correct -MGM rooms ARE small but it's like comparing a Marriott room with a Travelodge room :)

Excalibur is my favourite budget hotel I like the location and the rooms (I have only stayed in standard not widescreen) are large and clean but they are a little dark. I found the staff at Excalibur good and the room clean I would certainly stay here over say CC, IP, Harrahs, Bills, Tropicana or any of the North Strip properties past Encore. You do however not have a bath only a large shower.
Its Vegas time -no longer :T a five year old has changed Vegas time to Orlando time

I stand corrected on even suggesting CC...as a non-parent, it's one of the two I think of when I see people are travelling to Vegas on a budget, with kids...I also find the place really grubby and not very pleasant at all personally, but assumed that if you have kids it might be a good option...but obviously if kids even prefer to stay elsewhere, that says a lot. :)

I can see Orleans being a good option for the reasons you, pebbles and photome have stated...I tend to forget about off-strip hotels as we really like walking out of our hotel and having the strip right in front of us, but it would make sense if kids were involved.

Like Sew we found Excalibur to be perfectly acceptable (even without kids) and would stay there again...but we get much better deals at Harrahs properties as they tend to cater more to slot players than MGM does. :)

But at least we are all united in one thing - Stratosphere is not a good choice. :)
Does remembering a time that a certain degree of personal responsibility was more or less standard means that I am officially old?

I know but OH says he's prepared to go without a bath for the last 5 days and slum it in the shower....lol

Do you know if the $20 trick works at Excalibur....how likely are you to get an upgrade to a widescreen room?

Actaually if the only two choices were Strat and CC-I'd probably end up at the Strat-it's cleaner than CC (and I quite enjoy people watching on the Deuce :) )

Decent success rate, but obviously no guarantees...will depend a lot on how full the hotel is your dates.
