The symbol that looks like an "8" on its side is the symbol for a plano lens (ie a lens which has no focal power) meaning that you have perfect distance vision!. the +1.25 add indicates a condition called presbyopia, meaning the eye has lost it's natural ability to change its focus for close vision.
Thanks Pat, it's nice to know the exact details when your health is concerned. If I'd "read up" a little on eye sight before going to the opticians I'd have known the right questions to ask.
I was dissapointed with Specsavers as I believe they may have given me the wrong prescription. With my glasses on my reading ability with my right eye is slightly better than my left eye. The difference is very slight, that is, text (with my glases on) through my left eye appears very very slightly blurred and it feels as if this eye is having to strain to read. I did mention this to the optician but she said the presciption would be OK.
I'm wondering whether the grade for my left eye should have been an increment above that of my right i.e 1.5 instead of 1.25 or whether the optician has left them the same because of the negligible difference? I must admit, the service at Specsavers was very impersonal, almost production line like. There was no explanation of the results, I don't recall the person actually saying anything. The whole proceedure seemed to be carried out by a series of gestures. I now have one of my own for them :-) Their specs were bloody expensive too.
As an experiment I'm thinking about ordering a pair from budget specs for about £11 including delivery specifying the left eye with one increment above the right as mentioned above.
Any help or guidance appreciated.{Signature removed by Forum Team - if you are not sure why we have removed your signature please contact the Forum Team}

Hi again GTG,
It is usual for the reading add to be prescribed based on your near working distance and is largely dependant on your age. Because both eyes are presumed to have the same declination in focusing ability, this value is most often the same for each eye, BUT it is not unknown for people to have an "unequal add". Either this is the case for yourself, or assessment of your distance prescription needs re evaluated (as the total reading power is equal to your distance prescription PLUS your reading add). To be honest, before forking out any more cash, i would book for a recheck at specsavers (which they should have no problem with) and explain your findings, as this sounds as if it would have a simple resolution (Assuming there is no pathological reason for the near vision to be poorer in one eye, in which case no alteration in the prescription would affect the clarity)0 -

Thanks Pat for the very helpfull and informative reply.
You'll not be surprised to hear that I've just recently turned 50.
I'm taking you're advice and going to have my eyes checked out before parting with any more cash, thanks again for your help.{Signature removed by Forum Team - if you are not sure why we have removed your signature please contact the Forum Team}

I had a phone call from one of their client advisors due to my complaint about the thickness of the lenses. He was as surprised as i was on the thickness of lense and understood completely why i had returned them (yes they had finally found them, apparently they have had some major issues with the post office).
He was a really nice guy and explained that this was not acceptable and that the lenses really shouldn't be this thick.
I told him that i felt they were not fit for purpose as the weight alone would have serious health issues over a long exposure , he agreed.
Long story short (i was on the phone to him for quite some time) he refunded me all but the postage costs (its annoying but at least i got my money back) and assured me he would look into it.
For me its once bitten, twice shy i'm afraid and will stay now quite firmly with spec savers.
I truly had hoped this would have worked out as i'm now stuck back with my old prescription and no way at present to afford to go up to my new oneOh well those are the breaks but at least this experiance worked out in the end and i lost only around £3.
A male chef of 4. My restaurant is always full and i don't need to tout for business.
OK OK I'm a house husband but it did sound better my way :beer:0 -

I have used glasses direct and selectspecs in the past with no problems for single vision distance glasses. I now find that i need varifocals and am concious these are not so easy to get via online suppliers for obvious reasons.
Having looked around i can find only one that uses the services of local opticians to access your prescription for varifocal lenses (Glasses direct) and they are currently offering 18% on quidco so i am tempted to give them a try.
Anyone know of any other online places that employ mobile opticians to take your prescription ?0 -
