Rosieben my ketchup recipe is a lot simpler than the one danksshady posted. If you want it I'll post it later. We've made it quite a few times but it doesnt taste like Heinz cos lets be honest Heinz is full of so many chemicals it pretty much glows in the dark:D I know what you mean about the smell of the stuff though as it turns my stomach

Minimooch I also have a brown sauce recipe if you want it.This is a new recipe for me and I havent tried it out but its supposed to taste like HP Fruity if you remember it

Bootman could you possibly post the recipe for the Viennese buns?I am always looking for new recipes to try out in my BM and being a mere mortal who cant afford a Panny I havent got that recipe:o

Lesley - Please would you post the red and brown sauce recipes? Pretty please, with a condiment of your choice on top? :rotfl:

donnajt - what did you use for the steak sauce in the meatloaves please? I was all set to do them, but couldn't decide what to substitute...

Rosieben - apart from using vinegar to clean my windows - not sure quite how OS I am with cleaning - what do you do? …

Donna, I’m still adapting my routines, and still got a long way to go before I’m totally OS, its best to do it gradually – I use

    - white vinegar as fabric conditioner; an added bonus is my washing machine sparkles now as it got rid of all the old film that conditioners leave behind. Clothes feels lovely and soft and no smell of vinegar! ;)

    - half value powder and half washing soda for washing tea towels, I use half and half own brand and value powder for everything else.

    - as recommended on several OS threads, I now use about half quantities of everything for cleaning – washing powder, shampoo, w/u liquid – and 99% of the time it works fine.

    - stardrops and / or vinegar for most cleaning – I have spray bottles of stardrops solutions and white vinegar solution. I haven't bought any ‘posh’ cleaners for about 12 months but still using up odds under the sink (ashamed at how much I had accumulated! :o ). The one thing I still cant wean myself off is bleach, but I’ve cut down drastically and hope to do without it altogether eventually.

    - a weak solution of bicarb and water to clean inside the fridge and mw

I’ve stopped buying paper kitchen towels and instead I use old towels and tea towels. I love my ragbag!! :D

There are loads of other ideas on the OS cleaning threads, well worth a look.

    http://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/showthread.html?t=235198

Some of the ideas may not work for you (I stopped using washing soda in the clothes wash as my elderly rellie was getting rashes, since I went back to washing powder mix she is fine) so it’s a case of trying out what appeals and keeping the ideas that work for you.

    HTH ;)

Well here goes. The tomato sauce recipe is one my sister gave me

    3/4pt vinegar,1 Large Onion,4lb Ripe Tomatoes,2 large cooking apples,6oz Sugar,1 dessertspoon salt,1/2 tsp Paprika.

Chop the tomatoes, onions and apple and cook to a thick pulp. Then puree the pulp and pass it through a sieve to remove the seeds.Make sure all the pulp goes back into the pan otherwise it wont thicken.Put the puree back into the pan with the vinegar, salt, paprika and sugar.Cook until really thick and then pour into sterilised jars. You can either store it in the fridge at this stage and it will keep for about a month or you can put the lids on tighten them and then untighten them 1/2 a turn and boil the filled jars in a pan of water. The water should come up about 3/4 way on the jars.Simmer for 20 mins then remove and tighten the lids fully. They will keep for up to a year after this process

    HP Style Brown Sauce

    4lb Apples peeled,cored and sliced
    1lb Prunes stoned and sliced
2 large Onions peeled and diced
    3pints Malt Vinegar
    2tsp Ground Ginger
    1tsp Grated Nutmeg
    1tsp ground allspice
    1 tsp Cayenne pepper
    8tbsp Salt
    2lb Sugar

Put the onions and fruit into a large pan and cover with water.Cook until tender.Liquidize or sieve.Add the malt vinegar, spices, salt and sugar.Cook on a low heat until reduced and thick. This sauce can be filled into sterilised jars or kept in the fridge indefinitely

I just wanted to say what a fab thread, don't know how I missed it until today. I love all the photos of baking, very motivational, could you possibly keep them coming as it gets me in the mood for baking here. Also the photos of cupboards/fridges are great too, cos you never get a proper look in anyones fridge and it is good to see if we are normal!!:)

Not sure I'm brave enough to post a pic of my fridge. Got it nicely under control, but I have several things on the go at the mo, plus the remainder of a large haul of cheap fruit and veg that need sorting.
