hi all
I've looked at the BT website and read through this thread.
With regards to BT Option 1. Would I be right in deducing that from the 1st April, BT are in a nutshell replacing the 4.5p for evening and weekend calls up to 1hr in duration under the old plan, with the new call plan where you get free weekend calls, but you now have to pay the going rate for weekday evening calls?
I can see that perhaps catching quite a few people out if they continue to make evening calls?
Update: Finally got through to BT customer services on phone. They confirm what I have quoted above.

OTOH, for those willing to commit to stay with BT for 12 months (which I regard as sensible anyway), the option of free evening calls is available by upgrading to the Unlimited Evening & Weekend Plan.
Or using Primus Saver Option 2 CPS .............Time has moved on (much quicker than it used to - or so it seems at my age) and my previous advice on residential telephony has been or is now gradually being overtaken by changes in the retail market. Hence, I have now deleted links to my previous 'pearls of wisdom'. I sincerely hope they helped save some of you money.0 -
yes, I am aware of the BT option 2 with 12 month renewable contract offer for free weekday evening calls.
But I was thinking of those Option 1 customers who may not or cannot read any mail shot that BT intends to send out, so would be oblivious to the fact their weekday evening call will be costing them up to a quid after the 1st April.0 -

I've already convinced one neighbour, an elderly Aunt and my own Mother to change from BT Together Option 1 to the Unlimited Evening & Weekend Plan (none of them would ever consider moving their line rental from 'the GPO' anyway so it didn't take long).
In fact, the Orchid for my Mother has now arrived (she currently dials 1899 or 18185 manually for most of her calls - but BT will now save her money) and I'll be installing it on 18-2-08. As she's 50 miles away, I'll also be programming one of the ten onetouch buttons on her corded LST with ***12#4567890*3 so I can just tell her to press that button at the time of the GMT to BST change if I won't be visiting that particular Sunday.Time has moved on (much quicker than it used to - or so it seems at my age) and my previous advice on residential telephony has been or is now gradually being overtaken by changes in the retail market. Frankly - while 2000% (or whatever) makes a 'good headline'/publicity stunt - Ofcom won't care as they no longer regulate BT Retails pricing.
Also, I suspect you will see most of the other operators who currently offer 'upto an hour' pricing, change their own tariffs pretty soon..

If I'm honest, I stole the % part from Martin's appearance on LK Today this morning - so I'm sure the point's already been made.

According to this article it's only a 1900% price increase. That's not nearly as bad as Martin was making out!!!!
Easiest thing to do is move on to Option 2 (Free Evenings & Weekends) with the 12 month rolling contract, and use 18185 for calling mobiles and your weekday daytime landline calls. All it costs is your line rental plus your 18185 calls.
If that's not acceptable you can stay on Option 1 (Free Weekends) and sign up for Primus free evening & Weekends, via CPS, and use 18185 for calling mobiles and your weekday daytime landline calls. That will cost exactly the same as the scenario above. It is a bit more hassle, but it is also more flexible if you are likely to want to cease your telephone service, or change the Option, within 12 months.
If you do go for the rolling contract set yourself a reminder for 11 months and ensure that you are happy to go again before the contract automatically renews, on the same terms, for another 12 months. If you will be likely to want to cease your telephone service, or change the Option, within the following 12 months then arrange to downgrade to Option 1 (Free Weekends), pay £2.70 for Option 2 or upgrade to Option 3 (Anytime), all without the 12 month contract, and make alternative arrangements for your weekday and evening calls if necessary. They say they will contact you before your contract is up, but there is no harm in making sure that you are ready and willing, or not as the case may be.No reliance should be placed on the above.0 -
I`ve just read through all ten pages of this very informative thread.
Thanks to everyone, especially Heinz and Sunil.
In my own case, the way I see it is:
I`m on option one and I don`t really make a lot of calls.
If I stick on this package,I get free weekend calls,as long as I make one call a month of less than a minute on a weekday evening, this will cost me 7.5p.
(whether BT enforce the one call rule is another doubtful matter)
I pay by DD and I`m paperless, so the line rental will stay the same at
£10-50p a month.
I`m with Fast4 for unlimited BB up to 8 megs for £15-95 a month.
(although on a monthly contract,if I move before my one year is up in Nov.,I have to pay back the original connection fee of £80 )
If anyone would like to comment ---- feel free.0
