  • Have to say I agree with DMG24. I love New York as well but it's very fast paced and no matter if you tell yourself you won't let it dictate the pace - it will!!! After a week there I am totally exhausted and need a break to recover.

  • Hi
Just wondering if anyone has ever booked through http://www.hotelhippo.com

I just tried to book a twin Pod (The Pod Hotel New York) from 6th April - 14th april (8 nights). It's the cheapest I've found for that hotel £652 total inclusive of NY tax and occupancy. Plus 9% back through quidco

Only problem I cant get to the payment stage, put all my details in address etc, then it wont move on to the payment page. I tried emailing them and had no response, it seems they are only open mon-fri.

Any thoughts? Are the safe reputable to book through?

    Thanks
    Pamela

Jude - for your honeymoon, how about combining NYC with Miami? You've got the beach there if you fancy that for a few hours but also all the plus points of the city. The weather *should* be nice in January, though no guarantees! Might be a nice way to spend a few days?

You could either fly into NYC and out of Miami (or the other way round), or fly into and out of NYC and take internal flights to Miami in the middle? You can get some great deals on US internal flights, I've seen JFK/EWR to MIA for under $50 each way.
  • MARKYMOO PLEASE HELP
Please could you give me a bit of advice, do i stay in upper west side at the royal park hotel for £240 inc taxes (5 nights) or stay at the pennsylvania in mid town and pay £427 inc taxes, is it really a big nightmare getting from upper west side to the attractions and is it safe at night travelling back to the hotel in upper west side.
ive put the link below to the royal park so you get a feel of where it is and what its like

If i go for the royal park hotel it will save me nearly £200 which could be spent on shopping and attraction, im torn on what to do?

i'd be careful with that royal park ho(s)tel, as it says on the website, that even though you give credit card details online, you need to pay them cash or travellers cheques... i think thats kinda odd, and also, a good way of quoting one price on the site, and then adding tax on etc etc, blaming the website that tax isn't included etc etc. also, you can't book a room with a double bed if there is only one of you staying.. they just don't allow it, and strangely, i've never seen this before on new york hotel rooms (oh hang on this is a hostel) they charge PER PERSON PER NIGHT, whereas every other hotel in NYC that i've ever looked at charges PER ROOM... regardless of the amount of people (up to max occupancy)

i'm not a fan of the penn hotel myself, its grubby, old, big, impersonal, and slap bang in the middle crap, with no decent bars or individual restaurants around (unless you could sbarro, subway, mcdonalds etc as restaurants)....

as for travel times, it'll take about 10 mins to get from 96th street to midtown on the subway...
  • Hi Markymoo

there is 2 of us and we can get a double room ensuite for £40 plus taxes a night, i cant find an email address for the hotel anywhere even on the hotels own website? im not bothered about paying cash at the hotel and im assuming the tax is the city tax at approx 15% so to take the total price upto £230ish for 5 nights ro. I heard many places where you pay the hotel room when you book and the taxes seperate when you get there. Do you know if its a safe area and for the £170-£190 ish saving would you stay in upper west rather than midtown
    thanks for your help

i've never stayed up on the upper west or upper east, as i find there is very little of the nightlife i want available. I drink in greenwich, east village, les, and subways at night get few and far between, and a cab would be expensive up to that area.. also, again, i find it odd that tripadvisor hasn't got any record of this hotel, and few places offer it, again that would make my wary.

I stay in tribeca, because i like the area, its within walking distance of greenwich, so that can save some money on getting cabs, it's got some of hte best restaurants in NYC, and i'm prepared to pay around £90 - £100 a night for accommodation.

tax is 8.325%, plus 5% city tax, plus $2 per night occupancy, and something else too... but i forget
  • Hi, we went to New York in November, and stayed at the Ameritania, it is an amazing location, just up the street from Times Square, it is a 3 star, lovely lobby, bar etc and the rooms are the usual size for New York with an en suite, but hey, we only used the room to sleep as there was SO much to see, and the beds were suprisingly comfortable!

Booking direct with the hotel was not the cheapest option, we booked it through British Airways (We flew Continental) and the room cost us just over £500 for 5 nights. This is the cheapest I could find it!

    Hope this helps!

I'm a city person and love New York but a week would be enough for me too. For a honeymoon I'd either reduce it to a week and stay somewhere really nice in Manhatten with the saving or have a week in New York , and split the remaining week between Vermont (and ski) and Boston-or just Boston if sking wasn't on the agenda.
For hotels in New York-personally I'm not so fussed and this is what I'd personally do-to get the best price. I'd wait until 2 weeks before and then use priceline specifying a 4 star hotel and the area of Manhatten I want (either midtown east or midtown west or midtown south) I did this 2 year ago and got Hilton Times Square which is gorgeous-I paid $105 a night-the current rate for my dates was $300. I've done this at other times of year too and never paid more than £80 a night usually less.
