water at the bottom of the fridge

My fridge has a load of water in the bottom of it. I don't know if the little hole at the back is blocked or what. Any ideas?

I am sure there has been a thread on this before and if so I apologise but have tried a search and nothing comes up. Mind you I never seem to have much joy with the searches.

There's a very good chance that your self defroster drain is blocked.

Look below the plate at the back of the fridge and there will be a channel below it that water collects in when your defrost works.

There will be a hole at the lowest part of this channel that leads to through the back of the machine. Mop up all the water out of the channel and use something flexible like a pipe cleaner to clear the hole.

  • If you think that the hole is blocked you can clear this with drinking straws, maybe pushing 2 or 3 together to get the desired length then blow down them ( do not suck  )

I've tried sticking a skewer down it but it won't go at all. Think it might be frozen in there. I am pretty sure the thermostat is working because there is a little sign in the frige that lights up and says "ok" when the temperature is right and that is working.

If the drain looks like it's fozen, what about blasting it with hot air from the hairdryer for a minute or two?
I'd rather be a could-be if I cannot be an are; because a could-be is a maybe who is reaching for a star. I'd rather be a has-been than a might-have-been, by far; for a might have-been has never been, but a has was once an are – Milton Berle

Try something a bit thinner - if you don't have any spare guitar strings a straightened paper clip should do the job.

Thanks for all the replies. I've tried the hairdryer but still no success. I can't find anything thinner than a skewer at the moment so may have to wait to OH comes home from work.

  • I suggest blowing the gunk away with a straw because I had tried every pokey implement I had in the house, I had put up with the dripping water for months and it was cured in a single puff of air...
