Food Saver Bags

Options
Not sure if this will be of interest to anybody but on QVC today (2 August 2005) they have got as their special value some bags that you put your fruit or vegetables in and they are supposed to keep them fresher for much longer. To me (if they work) this is definately money saving as I tend to throw an awful lot of fruit and vegetables out as they go soft or mouldy.

On the demonstration they showed some carrots that had been in these bags for 28 days and some carrots that had just been in the fridge in the bags they came in. The ones in these special bags were all bright and crisp but the ones that had been stored in their original bags were very dull looking and bendy. They also showed strawberries that had been in the fridge for a week in these bags were fresh and plump but the ones that hadn't been in these bags were all mouldy and squishy.

Don't know if they work or not but I though it was worth a go.

    ..............ditto the Lakeland ones.
I also got some from the supermarket and I think they were made by the manufacturers of Bacofoil but they just didn't match the standard of Lakeland's.

Do they make a significant difference then? On all fruit and veg that you would normally keep in the fridge?

Any excuse to go to lakeland.............

the lakeland ones are just brilliant and I have some that are a year old and been washed several times and still work so they are good value for money. lakeland also do different sizes. I find them really useful for preparing a whole load of carrot stick, pepper strips etc because they were looking a bit sad by lunchtime when I just put them in a tupperware container

the only thing I found they weren't so good for is broccoli - it keeps very well but it does smell a bit - brassica! after a day or two
It doesn't matter if you are a glass half full or half empty sort of person. Keep it topped up! Cheers!

I used to use the Lakeland ones and they do work. I was bothered about using plastic though because you do have to throw them away eventually. I now use paper bags. I bought 100 from a health food shop and use them to keep all my veg in (fruit tends to last ages in the fridge not in anything anyway) and things like poatatoes and carrots are lasting ages.

Has anyone tried the food-saver bags that are presently on QVC? The claim to be made from a mineral that absorbs ethylene gas and keeps fruit and vegetables much longer than usual.

They are quite expensive at £14.82 for 50 bags. Does anyone know if they can be re-used?

I have never bought anything from QVC before but am tempted by these as I do end up throwing fresh fruit/veg away before it gets used up.

I haven't tried them, but I think Lakeland Plastics do them too so maybe it would be worth comparing prices. HTH
  • Yes i have tried them and they are rubbish, all the fruit and veg went mouldy so i sent them back to QVC and had a refund, so dont waste your money
