It all started when I hit 18 and only me to worry about. I took out a £5000 loan to buy a new car which was followed by overdrafts, credit cards and store cards. After charges etc the debt now amounts to somewhere in the region of £15000 to £20000. I also believe I have had a CCJ registered against me, I sent the first form back to acknowledge the debt and never heard anything since. This was sent to my old address, my parent’s house. I have also learned that bailiffs have been twice to their house looking for me. I am now 21 with a family of my own with a 7 year old step daughter, 24 month old twins and 14 month old triplets and due to get married next year. Now I could actually do with credit for a mortgage and people carrier, I cannot get it, my fault entirely, I know. I haven’t been avoiding the debt thinking it would just go away and be forgotten about, as you will know, its not that easy to forget about it, its that I have genuinely been scared about what to do about it all. One company has managed to find my new address, to which I am paying £10 a month to. I have no assets just a 10 year old Vauxhall Vectra which isn’t even worth £1000. when the triplets were born, I cut my hours at work to part time, which we just about managed but then my employer fired me due to me not being able to go back doing 4 or 5 12 hour days and nights when he wanted me to, so I am now out of work helping at home with the babies and will be returning to work as soon as possible. This leaves me and the wife to be on a very low income indeed as I don’t claim any benefits myself, all we live on is our tax credits which is much much less then people think when they ask. I would like to own my own home at some point in the future and get rid of this dark cloud from above my head as it is really getting to me now. I have considered going bankrupt to clear the debts but don’t know the ins and outs of it and what I will lose and not be able to get. Also how it would affect me joining the Police Force which I have wanted to do since I was a child.

Please please help!

Just to add, I haven't applied for my Credit Files from the CRA's due to not wanting the companies I owe pouncing on me when they get my new address.

    anyone at all?
  • :hello: Hello and welcome,

I don't know about the going bankrupt and joining the police part. Sorry

I was able to join another emergency service when I was though. :D

Things have changed since I had to go down that route, to get appropriate advice we would need to see a statement of affairs (ALL your monthly income and outgoings)
  • hi there & welcome. You need to post your SOA (see post at the top of the thread) so people an advise you on what to do. Alternatively contact CCCS etc (see free debt agencies at top of page) for advice. Obviously its your choice as to whether you contact companies but from what I've seen on here they usually catch up with you in the end so probably worth dealing with this rather than pretending its not happening...what does your Oh think about this?

Right, I will get the SOA sorted out asap. Its not that I am pretending its not happening, as I say its because I havent got a clue what to do. I know they will catch up with me as one has already done so, the one I am paying £10 a month to. I would just rather trying and get something sorted or at least starting to be sorted so I have something to put to them rather then them bombarding me with threats and demands and not knowing what to do or say to them.
  • Hi

As you would have seen on this site, please visit one of the debt counselling agencies like the CAB, Debthelpline etc. the numbers are posted on Martins site for you. (they also can be found in the front of most local telephone books if you have one)

Don't dispair, dealing with your debt and seeing the light at the end of the tunnel is better than avoiding it. Everyone will make constructive comments about your SOA and be supportive.

I think I have done this right. Its based on me, my partner and 6 children.

    Incoming:

    Chlid Benefit - £300 p/m

    Child Tax - £880 p/m

    Incapacity Benefit (Partner) - £280 p/m

    Total Income - £1460 p/m

As I say I get nothing as yet due t my last employer firing me due to not being able to go back to full time hours.

    Outgoing:

    Overdraft Fee - £12 p/m

Rent - £100 p/m (Housing Benefit pays the rest)

    Gas - £40 p/m

Council Tax - £60 p/m (My partner is seriously in arrears with this, over a years worth)

Electricity - £40 p/m (Again in my partners name before I moved in, about £1000 arrears, I tried changing suppliers and putting it in my name like I did the gas and setting up a PP for the arrears but they wouldn't let me)

    Home Phone - £30 p/m

    Internet - £10 p/m

Mobile - £40 p/m (For both our mobiles in total)

    Window Cleaner - £20 p/m

Shopping - £520 p/m (Do it weekly at £130 a week on average)

    Baby needs/nappies - £120 p/m

RAC Membership - £100 p/y (Pay it in one go but works out at about £8.33 p/m)

    Car Insurance - £145 p/m

    Car Tax - £180 p/y (£15 p/m)

    Petrol - £120 p/m

    MOT - £40 p/y (£3.33 p/m :P)

Car Maintenance - £200 p/y (£16.67. It is a 10 year old car and have spent more then that this year but that includes service too)

Only debt I am actually paying at the moment to HFC - £10 p/m

Child Care - £104 p/m (Twins in for 1/2 day a week for us to do our food shop)

    Sky - £ 38 p/m

    Total Outgoings - £1452.33

As mentioned, this is without paying to debtors except the £10 p/m to HFC. I have also cut out all the take aways we used to have so this is less then what we have been spending.

    Total Outgoings - £1452.33

The above are only small suggestions and someone with far more experience will come along with better advice.
You should check your benefit entitlments as well.
With regard to joining the Police, I know that they take a dim view of Police Officers in debt as this leaves them open to abuse etc; It might be worth seeking advice from your local Job Centre who would probably be aware of the your Area Forces regualtions.

    Good Luck
:j I have a persecution complex. Everytime I pass a shoe shop they persecute me till I buy them:j

I have checked benefits 3 times now and they say its correct. I check police, wont take anyone with bad debt with ccjs or bankrupt applicants untill 2 years after the bankrupty is finished.
