Up to 100 Free eMusic mp3 downloads

Options
eMusic, an online music downloading site, is offering a free trial, allowing you to download up to 35 tracks from its catalogue. Usually, it is a music download service where for a fixed monthly fee (from £8.99) you can download a certain number of tracks (its worth browsing to see if your type of music is included before going any further though).

What do I have to do?

Sign up for its free 30 day trial (click on the 35 free downloads banner, though for some people it can show a different number: If this is you, try clearing your internet history and cookies). You'll need to give it your credit or debit card details. Yet don't be alarmed, as long as you cancel the trial before the 30 days is up, your card won't be charged.

Once you have completed the application, and downloaded eMusic's download manager, you can pick 35 tracks to download from over 2 million songs in its catalogue. All the downloads are MP3 which means they're compatible both to play off a computer and all MP3 players (including iPods).

UPDATE 18/4/07 11.00AM

Go through this link - http://www.zvue.com/html/music.php and there is a link to emusic which offers 100 downloads. However, this could disappear or change at any time, so check the number of downloads offered before signing up.

Aren't 100 track trials available?

There are a few links floating about the internet, offering 100 tracks, but these tend not to be openly available like the official link above (ie you may be supposed to have bought a product off the promoting company to get them). As I can't vouch for the legitimacy of these, or whether they're open to all, I'm not going to include them. However if you spot a legit offer (not just a link) for 100 tracks, please do report it below.

Is it worth getting the subscription?

The cheapest ongoing subscription is £8.99 a month, for this you get 30 tracks, which are therefore at 30p each isn't bad value. Yet it doesn't include all chart music, so if you're a classics or gold type listener, or like music that's a bit off the beaten track, then it may be worth considering; but if you're a chart guru - its probably not worth it; ensure you cancel before the end of the first month so you're not charged. Ultimately it's all about what music you like and whether it has it!

At whatever stage you cancel, you're still entitled to keep all the free tracks.

How to cancel

If you're going to 'grab the free trial' only and then cancel, the best thing to do is download the free tracks straightaway and then cancel immediately.

To do this, log in with the username and password you set up, click on the Your Account link in the top right area of the page. From there, click on the Change Account Status link under the Subscription heading and follow the instructions noted on the page.

Been around a while this one.

Your URL link says 25 not 35 - and it not just classical either.

If you use this link (posted on MSE before) it's 100 in theory - BUT I don't know if that works in practice:

Only 25 downloads and it should also be pointed out that this is the bargain basement of music selection.

I have a pretty wide listening range covering loads of music but after 40 minutes looking cant find a single thing worthy of my first download. Did the normal thing of entering in about 12 different songs and 6 different mainstream artists in the search feature and got no hits for a single one. It may be free, but it is rubbish.

Yes - that's a fair point Willow - I think I had the same problem to start with.

What I did find though was that they do have (or did when I used them!) quite a lot of the early Snow Patrol material. If anyone only knows the band through the current album, it's well worth discovering or re-visiting that material IMHO.

Funnily enough Edna Snow Patrol is the only thing I have to work with too and I expect most of my downloads will come from their early albums. Still very disappointed with the selection though.

    Alright guys,

As well as the good classical/world music selection, one type of music to have a look through on there is the Indie and Alternative selection. There are quite a lot of critically acclaimed releases from the last few years e.g. Arcade Fire, Bloc Party, Sufjan Stevens, Antony & the Johnsons, Johnny Cash and so on.

Just depends on taste I guess :)

Aaargh - forget to mention it earlier on, but you can get cashback just for doing the trial here as well! :) No doubt all of the cashback sites like Quidco etc do it, but here is the RPoints one, which I used at the time:

  • Just signed up via the Nero link. No code needed and I have a 30-day trial with 100 downloads.

Its a very similar system to the barfly link, https://www.emusic.com/barfly. I went to a gig at Birmingham Barfly yesterday and received a card with that link on (no code). It gives you 35 downloads, but you're only meant to know about it if you went to the gig.

I had a free trial with eMusic before. I only downloaded 1 song then canceled because I couldn't find any songs I liked.

I've just looked on Quidco, Mutual Points and iPoints and no eMusic on any of them. That will save you the trouble of looking at those at least!
