Can anyone suggest energy saving bulbs for use on a dimmer switch? Was looking for them at the weekend, but no joy. All I saw stated that they would not work on a dimmer switched system. I have tried standard ones on a dimmer switched sand they do not work on anything under the maximum light setting.
It's due to the way fluorescent tubes work. I'm no expert on energy saving light bulbs, but if there are any dimming bulbs then they'll be on the high end of the market. Reason I say that is, it is actually possible to making a dimming fluorescent tube but it requires extra technology, which will in turn make it more expensive.

You can get energy saving bulbs that have some trickery inside so that if you switch the light on then off then on again in quick sucession they come on at a dimmer setting, but this is for ordinary switches not dimmers. And they aren't cheap either.

  • Don't try and use the basic "energy saving bulbs" with a dimmer switch.

The bulbs [lamps] need full mains voltage to operate.
The outcome will be a knackered dimmer switch [the switch circuitry burns out] which totally wrecks any attempt at economy b'coz of the switch replacement costs.

Ive noticed too, how these seem to be a whole lot cheaper than they used to be. If i remember rightly they used to be about a fiver each or somewhere there.
I noticed in my Nettos they have them at 47p each and thats their proper price not a special offer.

I think its good though as it hopefully encourages people to be more energy aware.
  • Tesco have some value ones but they are only 60 watt that I have seen. I have just kitted out the cottage with them and they have cost loads. Very difficult to get the little candle ones too.
