Thinking of getting an Apple...

The Apple Time Capsule is a hard drive and AirPort Extreme Base Station in one box, functioning as a wireless and Ethernet router as well as a backup device. But, important to note, there is no in-built modem.

I have a Macbook Pro, which I am very happy with.
However, it did cost a massive amount of money for what it is really.
I wanted a home Mac, and after doing a bit of looking online, discovered that you can essentially buy PC parts, then install the mac operating system on it - so it's basically a mac, without all the snazzy packaging.
I have been told that this might be a little naughty, but at the end of the day, I have paid for all the software, so in my mind, it's up to me what I install it on!
My fake mac works beautifully by the way. Just like the real thing!0 -

Install the wrong Apple software update, and that all could change very rapidly.0 -

Time Capsule is used with Time Machine for backups I don't think it can be used as an external hard drive though. The Apple Time Capsule is a hard drive and AirPort Extreme Base Station in one box, functioning as a wireless and Ethernet router as well as a backup device. Ah. That's what I wanted it for - an external hard drive. I suspect Time Capsule isn't for me then.
Essentially I want an external hard drive that I can store most of my music and memory hungry files on. I was of the belief that the Time Capsule offered me a wireless external hard drive for my Mac but if that's not the case I guess there's no point in keeping it. It would be nothing more than an expensive router for me.
Can anyone suggest a suitable alternative for me? I kinda like how Time Capsule allows me to plug my printer into it and send jobs to the printer wirelessly also. However, the main function has to be an external hard drive. Grateful for your help as I know nothing about external drives and would like a good and reliable one.theevilfrog wrote: »I have a Macbook Pro, which I am very happy with.

Why would you do this? I thought a Mac was as much about the sophisticated hardware as it is the software?0 -

Because it's a hell of a lot cheaper. Mac parts aren't sophisticated they are just normal computer parts that are over priced.
My PC is getting old, that's fine, I can rip out the motherboard and put in a new one. The graphics card is a little rusty, fine, rip it out and in goes the latest.
My Apple is a bit slow. Too bad, Steve Jobs doesn't like you upgrading his machines.
I don't like Apple, but I won't bash people that want to buy into them. All I say is be warned. They are over priced for what they are. You can get PCs that are more powerful and cheaper. Also there is the belief you're safe on an Apple, they are secure. They are not, they are just as insecure as Windows machines, but because they are as wide spread, they aren't targeted as much.
Anyway. I guess they are useful for non techies.
He's the new iPhone as well. Only visible to the most loyal Apple customers.
It's the perfect dig at Apple fanboys/girls

Steve Wozniak, co founder of Apple said the way the personalities were portrayed in the movie was accurate.
So it shows you what an @rsehole Steve Jobs really is.0 -
Discovering today that you cannot make video calls easily between Macs and PCs, Live Messenger won't do it and Skype has a reputation for being very flaky with Macs.
This has come about because far distant relatives have acquired a shiny new Mac with built in video camera and now we want them to actually USE the thing.
[ UPDATE ] Well what do you know, they installed Skype at the other side and lo and behold we are now video chatting 'tween Windows at this end and Mac at the other.0 -

That is exactly what I've got mine set up as. It's great because I have an iMac and a Mac BookPro, so it's great to share files between everything. Also, all 4 macs in the house, can print to the 1 printer.
Once you've set it up, it's seamless, and sits there, your laptop will back up to it, and you can always connect to it, and drag files on, off, and use the hard drive space for what you want.
is the confusion the set up, because it is a wireless router as well?!

Sorry, you're incorrect. You can get PCs that are more powerful and cheaper.
But are they better computers? Also there is the belief you're safe on an Apple, they are secure. They are not, they are just as insecure as Windows machines, but because they are as wide spread, they aren't targeted as much.
Yet they're also targeted less than Linux, which is even less widespread.Anyway. I guess they are useful for non techies.
It always amuses me when people say that. The average Apple user is much more "techie" than the average Windows user. They're more likely to own pretty much every new device there is. They're more likely to own a smart phone, a satnav, a camcorder, a digital camera, an mp3 player, a website, a blog, back up their software, use online backup services, download music, use streaming video services, edit movies, upgrade to the latest OS, etc, etc.
Apple users drive the adoption of every new piece of technology in the consumer space, and they're not "techie" apparently. :rolleyes:So it shows you what an @rsehole Steve Jobs really is.
He's an !!!!!! who managed to turn a struggling company on the brink of closure into one of the most profitable technology companies in the world.0
