This is the discussion thread for the following MSE News Story:

"Abbey is hammering many of its current account holders with hundreds of pounds of backdated bank charges this month. One MoneySaver was smacked with £250 of fines in one go because the bank failed to collect those fees over the past few months.

Other affected customers have complained about their treatment by Abbey..."

Many thanks to the many MoneySavers who brought this issue to our attention on the forum (some of whom are mentioned in the story).

  • Quite unsuprising, Lloyds TSB have just sprung this suprise on me, charging me nearly £140 in one go. After a very lengthy battle with them on the phone I got them to remove £75 worth of charges, but not before I was lied to over the phone about more being potentially removable in the branch, and wasting my lunchtime going down there!

The Abbey issue is an internal computer glitch relating to charges from last year that were not debited at the start of the year. It is slightly different to the situation you have got.

We received a bank statement for last month stating that Abbey were to debit 2 lots of £25 for bounced direct debit for last November. A direct debit bounced as it would have taken into overdrawn by 20p. They then tried again and obviously it still bounced hence £50 total charges.

We went into the Abbey today to ask why has it taken 8 months for the charges to be applied to our account and that this was unsatisfactory. The staff agreed and told us to call a number from the phone in the bank lobby area to sort it. We did and the bloke there apologised and said it was due to a computer glitch and it shouldn't have taken this long for the charges to come out. Although we admitted the direct debit would have taken us overdrawn by 20p and there wasn't enough funds in the account they still asked us what we would like them to do about the late charges. We asked for a full refund of both charges and they said yes and it would be refunded to us within 48hrs!

If you are with the Abbey they will refund you the charges despite them saying it is due to a computer glitch.

    Good Luck!

Money saving tip: stay in credit. An easy enough solution and it solve a lot of unnecessary palaver.

That's a cracker, no-one would ever have thought of that. Got any more nuggets of wisdom?

  • Kim is right though! You dont just get a bank charge out of thin air, it means the customer has not enough money and has spent or tried to spend beyond their means.
