help-bank charge question

have had 4 bank charges this year with abbey (£35 each one)since DEC .Was informed in writing when monthly statements arrived that they would be taken out on the 4th of following month. I wrongly assumed that abbey had done this. Recieved Mays atatement today to say that on the 4th July abbey would be taking £200 out of my account for the bank charges since Dec 08!!! I called abbey and they said due to a technical error they had not taken them out of my account when they had notified me they would be !
Is this my fault for not noticing- I assumed they had come out ....now I have £200 coming out of my account in July that I do not have ..these charges were 6 months ago - is that right ???? anyone else in same position?thanks

This is happening with all Abbey customers: I emailed them a few weeks ago:

    "Thanks for your e-mail.

We have begun and will continue over the next few weeks to collect charges on some personal banking accounts which were due to debit from January 2009 onwards. The transactions that incurred these charges may have occurred from as early as November 2008.

Customers were notified as normal of any charges incurred and the date they would debit via their statement. However, these charges were not collected on the specified date but are now being collected from accounts.

Customers may call to query any debits from their account on 0845 9724 724. We are available 8am to 9pm, Monday to Saturday.

    Regards"
Give them a call and explain your circumstances and see what they can do.

Explain your individual circumstances, tell them that you thought it was paid and even offer a form of payment plan if that makes sense(I would claim the charges back anyway--but that is kinda a separate issue).

It can't be ALL customers natweststaffmember, I incurred a couple of fees (due to the usual end of month scramble) and they were taken out as expected.

I think your name might be giving away your hidden agenda!
  • Hi everyone,

This is my first post so please stick with me :o)

My mum is in the same situation, she has incurred 6 (yes 6!!!) bank charges this month, these are from Nov 08, Dec 08, and Feb 09.

She doesn't dispute the fact that she owes for the bank charges however when she went into the Abbey they put her on the phone to someone in a foreign call centre who said she would get rid of 2 of the charges but made out as though by doing this she was doing my mum a huge favour.

She's unemployed due to severe ill health at the moment and they deducted the charges from her benefits all at once meaning she couldn't afford to buy food and electricity (pre-payment) last week.

These charges then took her into an unarranged overdraft for which she will then incur yet more charges that she again wont have the money to pay for... Vicious circle!!!

I could be completely wrong here but is there some rule somewhere that says you should have the same amount of time to pay back a debt as it took for the company to get in contact with you, in this case being over a period of say 4-7 months.

Any help on this subject would be greatly appreciated as I'm not in a position to financially help out.

And yes I'm trying to get the ball rolling on the bank charges rebate situation for her.

    Many thanks

pedantic post. It is happening to ALL customers of that bank who are being charged now.
I think you need to read my signature. For your benefit, I was dismissed from NatWest on February 11th this year so if I had any agenda, I don't anymore and my only agenda is to help people with bank charges or any queries where I can help.

I think she needs to start the process of reclaiming your bank charges back

Thanks natweststaffmember, I've asked her to get a note of all the bank charges from the last six years so we can get started on reclaiming  as she may actually qualify for hardship, although from reading these forums you can never quite tell what a hardship case is
