MSE news: Abbey hits bank charges victims with huge backdated fees

i would be interested in your view on banks allowing basic bank accounts to overdraw by £500 which you are supposed to have the piece of mind that you cannot get in debt with a basic bank account?
I think there is a lot of disinformation out in the public domain. I have never advised when I was working for the bank that any such account with a card cannot get into minus figures. Accounts will go to collections on the trigger of -£250.00 which a few years ago was -£125.00 so you can interpret that as you see it.
I am glad you have used the terms "banks allowing" because there is not such thing as a bank NOT allowing an account to go overdrawn.0 -
I was a victim of exactly what the thread title says.
One day I logged on to find £270 of fee's in one day, acquired over the past few months.
Needless to say, it took a little while to get my head above water after that one."A bank* is a place where they lend you an umbrella in fair weather and ask for it back when it begins to rain."
(*Unless it's Santander. The branch says they sent you an umbrella 3 times already and don't understand why you don't have it yet and want it back right now!!!)0 -
Right! Thanks to all the advice on here! I found 8 lots of interest and charges had gone out of my account totalling £136.61 taken by abbey. Unpon 2 very long frustrating calls got informed these were charges on interest from my overdraft dating back to Jan and as these were interest charges there was nothing they could do about it but they were sorry that they had forgotten to charge me month by month! NOT HAPPY i rang the collections team who didnt even need me to quote the banking code where 14 days notice should be given beofre charges are taken. The lady put me on hold came back and said all charges shall be reversed in full and back in my acc within 7 days!
So please please dont be fobbed off becuase it is their fault and they know it!!!0
