Are our chips too dear in Northern Ireland?

    I can confirm you are being ripped off! As the OP suggests, a chippy in Liverpool would charge 90p-£1 for chips. I'd mash them in the chippy fella's face if he tried to charge me £2 a bag!!:rotfl:

    Although a bloody fish was £3.40 last week which I thought was shocking.:eek:

    I'd imagine a lot of the price variations would be to do with portion sizes. some chippies give you one of those silly little white polystyrene trays with a handful of chips on them and call it a portion (Not enough to fill a hole in your tooth) Others give you a big old stylie "MAN" size portion which you could feed a small country with. I think it's therefor a bit hard to say you're being ripped of unlesss you can compare like for like.

    With the comments regarding where chippies source their chips from, as someone who knows their spuds and been in a few chippies in their life. I would agree with some previous comments regarding chippies not knowing what a potato would look like. Majority buy them in pre-prepeared. OK not necessarily frozen but washed, peeled and chipped but still labeled as "Fresh" which yes they technically are. All they have to do then is throw them in the fryer. Also majority of chips will be Maris Piper variety of potato which do not grow very well in Northern Ireland (Not as good quality or Dry Matter as those grown way down south of Ireland or in South England (they need more sunlight and dryer conditions) so potentially the potatoes have to come further (Potatoes shipped in from england will add about £1000 per 20 Tonne to the price of the potatoes.

    I actullay think the only places that rip you of with chip prices are those little chip vans at Shows, events and the likes where they have a captive market.

    Would second that. I believe they actually contract local growers to supply the potatoes and in a lot of cases actually supply the Seed potatoes to the growers. Good on them..:T

    aye, i had from them for the first time on Saturday from Smyths.. Not as good as Eddie spences though! I didnt realise our chips were dear. I want chips now.

    Moes is a separate business, owned by the same folks who have Moes Grill at Junction One.

    I prefer to cut my own chips. Much nicer and cheaper too ;)

    My sister went to a take away and paid £15 for 2 fish suppers, no drinks or extras. :eek: She did say the fish was tasty.

    Chips here are very expensive compared to England - but oh so good :D

    Back home I wouldnt even eat a chip shop chip from one month to the next as they were always slimey soggy things. The spuds over there are usually the waxy type, the ones that take forever to brown when roasting. Here I have found it pretty difficult to find a minging chippy,most have been yummy.

    Ive also come to call it " a chip" and have aquired a taste for chip and cheese, chip,peas and gravy and even a chip buttie with cheese:eek:

    One thing I really miss about the chippies here, no pies:confused:

    Not all chip shops here cut their own, lots are bought in pre cut but fresh. Some order in pre blanched as well
