Update Note 20 March 2009: O2 Announces new 24 month contracts.
In what's undeniably a pretty business-savvy move, today O2 announced that as of 3 April, the iPhone will be available on 24 month contracts, as well as the current 18 month ones. The monthly prices haven't changed, but opt for 24 months at £34.26 and you get an 8GB iPhone free, and if you take the £44.05 package you get the 16GB version free. Currently you need to pay an additional fee of nearly £100 to get these phones on those tariffs.
Yet, rather than just cut the cost outright as speculated below O2's covering costs with an extra six months line rental, making this a lesser deal than many had hoped for. The reason that's a worry for tech-lovers is that there's a new iPhone expected this summer, and who knows what else planned for 2010, customers taking out this deal may well find their once-shiny toy looks pretty dated come the contract's end. Then again, iPhones aren't exactly top MoneySaving anyway!
Press Release: 24 Month iPhone Contracts
Back to last weeks note about the rumoured changes...
What's the deal?
Strong, though as yet unconfirmed, industry rumours claim that O2 will reduce the cost of the 3G iPhone come May. It's likely the 8GB model will be offered free on the most popular £34.26/month package (it's currently only free on a £44.05 or £73.41/month tariff), and the 16GB model will be free on the £44.05/month package (currently £57.74 on a £44.05/month tariff).
So if you were planning on buying an iPhone wait and its probably getting cheaper. Though it's worth noting that while significant, these potential cuts hardly make the iPhone a top choice for those who want to cut costs, much much cheaper deals are available with other handsets.

Why's it doing this?
Its almost certain Apple's set to release a new and improved iPhone this summer. As ever when it comes to the super-secret company, there's no official release date, but if previous years are anything to go by, mid-July seems a decent bet.
There's also speculation that O2 will lose the exclusive rights to sell the next iPhone, with Orange said to be vying for the lucrative contract. Again, though, this is only a rumour at this point.

People seem to be mesmerised by the iPhone. Remember, this is a money saving forum! Even at a new reduced rate as mentioned above, you have to be a heavy user indeed to get value out of these sorts of tariffs. I decided to go hi-tech recently and finally bought a smartphone. Unlocked from Ebay, a Nokia s60 series WiFi phone will knock spots off an iPhone for open, free applications and built in Real Audio player (iPhone bans any Realaudio). My running costs on Virgin PAYG are under a tenner a month including as much 3g data as I practically need at 30p for any one day's use. Plus you will not have to send the phone away to be dismantled to have the battery replaced one day.0

The music player on an iPhone is absolutely wonderful, and the internet experience on an iPhone is also worlds ahead of anything on a Nokia. There's also a library of over 20,000 applications available for the iPhone.
An 8 GB iPhone on Pay and Go is £350, with free mobile internet.0 -

I hear Microsoft are hard at work bringing IE 6 to Windows Mobile.
There's just no stopping the march of progress, is there?0 -
Well i'm not using the inbuilt WebKit browser, I'm using OperaMini (the free one not the Mobile one!) and it's a lot better.
Also the WebKit is touted as being the next software Microsoft will be using after IE8 is released. IE8 looks like that last Browser Microsoft will use using the current IE base.Laters

Microsoft using a rendering engine developed by in large part by Apple?
Seems pretty unlikely, especially as Microsoft have said that standards compliance isn't something they're terribly interested in.
Stranger things have happened though I suppose.
it's open source, so it's there for whoever wants to use it.0 -
The WebKit has been getting Great reviews lately (only Browsers not using it are Firefox and IE). iPhone and Google's Chrome and Nokia phones currently use it's engine.Laters
