Sock monkeys!

grumpy he's fab!! i began sewing all mine by hand then i got a shot of a sewing machine but i only use it to do the body/legs and the tail. i find it a bit fiddly to do the arms and ears with the machine.
i found it loads easier to do all the sewing of the bits first and cut them out etc in a batch then stuff them all and then sew all the bits together. i'm currently stuffing monkey number 8 of 14 where i have sewn all the bits etc first (hope that makes sense i'm rubbish at tryig to explain things) it just means that i only have to take the machine out once then i can put it away and then i sit and stuff them all together and get rid of my pillows and not half open pillows and filling everywhere etc.
anyway
good luck with the rest and remember to post pictures.0 -
to the poster above who has the website.... i'm a bit miffed that you think that my monkeys (and the others on here) are inferior to yours which is what you have inferred in your post - perhaps i'm not the worlds best sewer but i think that ALL the monkeys on here are fantastic even more so when they are made with love specifically for the person they are given or sold to so even though i don't have a fancy website nor make them particularly fancy clothes and i also use possibly the cheapest socks that i can find no high quality materials here just good old fashioned cheap supermarket socks, i would like to bet that the people who have received mine wouldn't part with them even if you offered them £100. even with only having 3 months experience making these in my leisure time
i'm assuming that seeing as you joined in jan and have only posted on this forum that you googled your business name and up came this forum, i think you will also find that the poster did not ask for a breakdown of your costs or justification of why you charge what you do, they merely posted that she thought that folks monkeys should be selling for more than they were seeing as the going rate so to speak was around the £35 mark
from one miffed sock monkey maker (albeit of inferior quality when compared to certain others)0 -
Just looked on the 'professional' website. Some of ours are as good as that. As for the costumes they have just been bought from Bear Factory/Build a Bear Workshop. I could do that
then charge £35 too :T :T :T

 Thats cheating no wonder the price is so high lol, I think home made with a bit of blood is more personal.:rotfl:
Yes I stictch myself at the same time lol, always watching Tv or on the internet while making them.
Any ways professional I say pah, who needs them. Normal monkeys with defects means more character. I love a wonkey ear or lumpy tail. (Not a dig at my sock monkey chums) Wins in 09 = A vodka cocktail kit thing lol, £150 Amazon voucher.0 -
New poster on this thread...
My sister made me a sock monkey for xmas last year and I was delighted with it. Apparently its a "tree monkey" (made from over the knee socks) - they have longer legs and arms. She makes them for friends and family & made a bride and groom for some friends wedding present. One of hers gets posted round the world from friend to friend and puts a post on her facebook sock monkey group everytime it's been somewhere new!
I've been meaning to have a go at making sock monkeys since I got mine a year ago but haven't got round to it, but guess what I'm going to be doing tomorrow... buying some socks!
I've got some old hiking socks which are nearly in holes in the toes so I might have a practice with those and sew a plaster or bandage over the holey/thin bits.
I also post regularly on the depression support thread and I'm going to post a link on that thread to your lovely sock monkey thread because I think seeing all your lovely photos will really cheer people up.
Many thanks to all for your inspiration and photos. Keep them coming.

guess this one belongs here as i used the monkey pattern as a base for this one (shorter tail that isnt stuffed just sew at both ends, shaped horns which i cut into shape -done in much the same way as the ears though and instead of using the heel of sock for mouth part i used the larger toe part)
introducing daisy the fluffy pink sock cow (i hand sew so much prefere the fluffy socks as they hide a mulitude of sewing sins)Been comping since july 2008~wins so far:j £15 esprit vouchers:j pair of tickets for flower show:j Now 70 cd:j0 -
