  • Hi Everyone!!
OB been busy turning our blackberries into jam and making some room in the freezer. Hurrah!
We are doing ok this month. Having to stock up and can't believe how much ground nut oil has gone up in price. Any ideas for cheaper alternatives?

Thanks for the replies about my deleted post. I am a little annoyed/upset about it as:
I am only able to book my trip because of the savings I have made due to the Grocery Challenge and your support. I wanted to say thank you.
I may be doing my own catering for my wedding next year so will need to pick your brains about what food to get for a good price.
I have only posted twice this month.

    Rant over.

    Have a great day.

    :wave:Mornin' Lovelies!

:T First of all Thank you so much! to everyone who posted teabag suggestions for me:T I thought it was probably not such a good idea to post individual "thank you " posts but I am really really grateful. :A

I haven't had to do a proper shop yet this month - just fruit, milk and bread really. (And one day this week my son came home with the bread and milk we needed which was an unexpected bonus! :j Bless him - I wonder what he wants... ;):D )

Lovely peeps keep giving us things from their vegetable gardens, and I had quite a lot of food stashed which is unusual for me.

I stock up on dry goods whenever there's a good special offer and store it in the "Prosperity Corner" (Feng Shui) of the kitchen on shelves but it's rare for me to have a stuffed freezer or crowded cupboards as I try to buy just what I need and no more.

It just goes to show that I must have gone off the rails a little bit the past couple of months!

I'm feeling fairly optimistic about hitting my target so that's great. :j

What's not so great is the uneasiness I feel about posts being deleted. It just doesn't seem very friendly and supportive - especially as the GC is so much quieter the past week or so since we had the big discussion. I must admit I thought that deletion would be a last resort measure rather than in the first instance.

I don't mean to whinge, but I think it will be bad for the thread if people are too scared to be a little chatty for fear of deletion.

Also, could someone please talk me through how to find out how many times I post a month on this thread? We were talking about it before on the discussion thread and I'd like to have a look.

I'd be happy to receive the info in a PM if you don't think anyone else would like to know how to do this.

Have a good day everybody!

I wish people would give us some lovely veggies! Although we have been given some apples. :o Shouldn't grumble.

I used my food dehydrator last night for the first time and made apple rings. It was really easy to do and the apples came out really well. Hopefull this will stop us wasting any food!

OH made a fab canneloni last night. Normally he would pile all the ingredients in regardless. I suggested that he kept some of the meat back to put on jacket potatoes and he agreed - a small but significant succeess! :T

  • Just swung by to update my sig. It's been an expensive month as I've had my BF's little girls to feed over the weekend too but I'm still pretty hopeful. Hope everyone has a good MSE day.
It's up to me now and nobody else.

    Hi everyone,

I'm just going to take a look at the thread now, but to be honest Penny and I feel that we can't win with this one. People are leaving the Grocery Challenge because of the chatty posts and we tried to draw up guidelines that would be acceptable to everyone. We gave everyone the oportunity to object to them when they were first posted and no one did.

We have to have some sort of compromise here and that means the GC stays more or less as it was to please some people with posts that are completely irrelevant to the challenge removed to please others.

I had planned to leave putting the guidelines into start of the thread until the start of next month but I'll look at doing it later today.

Sorry if I sound grumpy, I don't mean to but we've tried to reach a compromise and I'm not sure what else we can do. It's probably something to do with the fact that I haven't had my first coffee of the day yet too. :o

Good morning! My challenge is still going surprisingly well, hardly spent anything over the past week, though my bank card wasn't working for a few days and then we've all had a bug so not been eating, so that prob accounts for it!

Spent pennies on some reduced stuff in Mr T's that actually fitted in with the meal plan, rather that just buying it with no thought about how to use it. Got 2 stir fry mixes for 5p each, really can't make it cheaper myself! Got 4 portioned swedes, total cost 24p, and two large bags of big mushrooms, one for 7p and and for 8p, so feel really pleased!

This challenge is concentrating the mind wonderfully, think all I need for this week is some cheese for macaroni cheese on fri. Thank you everyone on here for enabling me to get this far!

    Hi all

Our loo has somehow stopped flushing......OH has investigated and he can't see why it isn't working and using buckets is a PITA.....

    1. Perhaps the smilie is more appropriate than you think & 2....what are you using the buckets for  SORRY! Couldn't resist it!

Our nearest MrT is growing to--what looks like--double in size. In some ways I fear it will do more harm to the little local shops I try so hard to support but my pennies are no more made of elastic than anyone else's :o Damnation to these big, faceless corporates who deem to tell me where I can or cannot spend my money

I was wondering tho, if anyone whose had similar experience of their supermarket being upgraded, had noticed if they spent more than before. I'm assuming there's more choice :j but will the prices be going up too, to cover the cost?

Guess I'm trying to be fore-warned so I can be fore-armed when the onslaught begins in earnest

If you go to the main page on Old Style, near the top you'll see the Grocery Challenge. To the right of the thread title there's a column that's headed 'replies'. If you click on the number of replies, a separate window will open and show who has posted on the thread and how many times.

I hope this helps. I'll delete this post later today.

  • Just a quick one to report a NSD yesterday and probably today too - AND to ask a quick question.......

When I make the custard cookies can I use packets of custard mix (Tesco's own make) instead of the "custard powder" stated in the recipe?
I only have these in and wanted to avoid spending any more than necessary. A trip to Tescos for 1 item always means at least a £10 spend!

Tea tonight will be pasta from the store cupboard and some yummy fresh M&S pesto that needs using up. I'll make a great big wodge of it and bring it to work for lunch tomorrow too.

Have agood day and thaks in advance to any answers to my question above,
    Cheers.
