Energy Companies Price Rise Petition

The other thing not mentioned about the French cap on prices is that the suppliers are majority government owned. If 85% of any companies shareholders told them to do something they'd have little choice. If the French governemtn chooses to subsidise (if neccessary) electricity, then they can as they pretty much own the company. Here the governement doesn't have that option.
PS - to back up moonrakerz comparison with his German friend, look at this website

The French Govt clearly have the right idea IMO. Worse thing that ever happened Thatcher's govt privatising the utilities. People say competition is a good thing for the punters and sometimes it is. Problem with competition in the utility industry is there are 6 main companies desperate for your business, there isn't a choice whether you have their product (i,.e. heat and light is essential to us all), and sharp practices appear to be common place.
My dream would be for a pro-active Govt to suddenly decide it's in the interests of its poulation to take the utlities back into public ownership, doing away with these lying, discredited, morally bankrupt conglomerates and their commission based salespeople.Call me Carmine....

I remember years ago being told that many Energy Companies abroad were controlled by their Governments so they were able to be subsidised. I also remember hearing that if you moved house in France on the day someone would come and bill you there and then and you would be expected to pay up. Don't know if it's still the case but it shows that we cannot compare like with like against other Companies. Mind you perhaps the Energy companies here could drop prices if they could save on chasing up debts!Self Employed, Running my Dream Jobs0

A good story, but have you seen the gas and electricity prices in France -
http://www.edf-bleuciel.fr/accueil/j-ai-besoin-d-energies/electricite-et-gaz-naturel-141742.html
Taking some prices from EDF in France for an average house -
Electricity £185 per annum standing charge and 9.0p per kWh
Gas £100 per annum standing charge and 4.3p per kwH
Against EDF in the UK (and these are the prices after the recent 35% increase)* -
Electricity £0 per annum standing charge and 8.0p per kWh
Gas £55 per annum standing charge and 3.2p per kwH
(*calculating the standing charge from the differential pricing for the first x number of units less the DD and dual fuel discounts)
So on my fuel consumption, if I moved to France I would pay 48% more. No wonder that the French government is leaning on the energy suppliers in France to only increase prices by 4%0 -
