Please dont just nominate any old charity without looking in to their ethics. As stated elsewhere Cancer Research UK are very much Pro Vivisection which means they support animal experiments. Over three million animals are used for experiments in the UK every year. As a result an animal dies in a laboratory somewhere in the UK every 12 seconds. Not only are these experiments scientifically unreliable in predicting effects in humans, but there are many non-animal alternatives that offer a cheaper, quicker and more accurate solution.
BUAV http://www.buav.org/index.php have a list of ethical charities here http://www.buav.org/downloads/pdf/Charities_Guide.pdf
from that I list I nominate

2nd Ifield Scout Group
http://www.ifieldscoutgroup.org.uk/group/members.htm
Scout Group - Boys and Girls - Age 7 to 99
I am a Cub Leader, our headquarters need to be rebuilt. We have the land and have raised over £170,000 to rebuild the headquarters - we need £300,000. We have 117 members ages from 7 to 73. We are a very active group - with all sections camping and have weekly meetings. We have grown more than 40% in the last 10 years and have still got a waiting list. Our Headquarters are leaking and the steel frame is rusty and warped - we have also out grown the size. We are actively fundraising and would be grateful for a boost of funds.0 -
Christians Against Poverty
In a day where the problem of of debt is growing at an immense rate, this body, which operates openly in the marketplace, to help anybody, without conditions or further commitment, brings urgent relief to individuals and families. It helps restore the self esteem of people in their community.
One in four of its clients have contemplated suicide. One in four of marriage break downs quote financial problems to be a major cause of their demise.
This group, which is well respected among the proffessional bodies with which it works, offers a debt management service to all freely. There is no cost to the person in need.
Their website is :-
www.capuk.org
I would commend the service to anyone in need, but particularly for these awards.0 -
The duke of cornwall spinal injuries unit
http://www.spinalinjurycentre.org.uk/
www.spinal.co.uk
Not a proper charity i know but they are still desperatly in need!!!
I would like to say how much i really apreciate the doctors and nurses at the unit however the resources are stretched beyond belief....Those with spinal injuries come to the unit 24-48 hours after their accident/injury which is still a critical time, many my have only just been operated on and are still in considerable pain. As the unit in salibury covers all of devon, cornwall and somerset, wiltshire and the south there are many patients there and funds are needed to be able to provide every patient with the care and resources they need, not what the unit can afford.
This unit is for the recouperation and rehabilitation of those with injuries, children and teenagers included.0 -

a. Help for Heroes
b. www.helpforheroes.org.uk
c. Provides support for wounded servicemen and women
d. "What is H4H all about? It’s about the blokes, our men and women. It’s about Derri, a rugby player who has lost both his legs, it about Carl whose jaw is wired up so he has been drinking through a straw. It’s about Richard who was handed a mobile phone as he lay on the stretcher so he could say goodbye to his wife. It is about Ben, its about Steven and Andy and Mark, its about them all. They are just blokes but they are our blokes; they are our heroes. We want to help our heroes."
We are non political and do not wish to comment on the rights and wrongs of a particular conflict; we simply want to do something to help those very special people who are brave enough to volunteer to serve their country and are wounded while doing so.0 -
A. Water Aid
B. http://www.wateraid.org/uk/
C. Promotes & funds sustainable safe clean water sources worldwide
D. Every 17 seconds, a child in the developing world dies from water-related diseases. Over a billion people worldwide lack access to clean water and over 2.5 billion lack access to basic sanitation. Without sanitation and water there can be no sustainable development in health, education and livelihoods, locking people into a cycle of poverty and disease. That may seem an insurmountable problem but £120 alone could pay for the cement and provide a trained mason to work with the community to line a well and fit a handpump in Malawi. Think how much more we could achieve with the resources of MSE and, remember, we can choose to give globally as well as locally. Many tx to all who post constructively in all the forums!:beer:0 -
Motor Neurone Disease (MND) is a progressive neurodegenerative disease that attacks the upper and lower motor neurones.
http://www.mndassociation.org/index.html
Degeneration of the motor neurones leads to weakness and wasting of muscles, causing increasing loss of mobility in the limbs, and difficulties with speech, swallowing and breathing.
The incidence or number of people who will develop MND each year is about two people in every 100,000, while the prevalence or number of people living with MND at any one time is approximately seven in every 100,000. Men are twice as likely as women to get it.
This may not seem a lot, but unfortunately there is no effective treatment yet for MND, and sufferers die quite quickly - within 18months of diagnosis.
5 years ago I'd never hear of this disease, now it seems everyone I speak to knows someone who's had it (I say 'had it' in the past tense because that person will now be dead).
I watched my husband die inch by painful inch over the 18 months. At the end he couldn't move or speak, eating was out of the question. he had to fed through a tube into his stomach. In the early days he had a speech machine, but as he lost the use of his fingers he could only communicate by blinking - one blink yes, two blinks no. He had to wear nappies and be cleaned like a baby. He couldn't control his mouth muscles so drooled continuously. He couldn't lie down to sleep of the salvia would have choked him. The speed of this disease is truly shocking, and social services struggled to keep up. The MND Assoc. helped us with equipment, information and support. I can't speak highly enough of them. They were wonderful and deserve your vote. Please visit their website, then click the thanks button below.0 -
a) Vale Wildlife Rescue & Hospital
b)http://www.vwr.org.uk/
c)Vale Wildlife Rescue rescues, treats and rehabilitates sick, injured or orphaned British wildlife. (very sorry, couldn't do it in 8 words!)
d)This is a wonderful charity that is very deserving of extra support. So much emphasis these days is on wildlife conservation and issues abroad, all of which are extremely important in today current climate, however our UK wildllife charities are working hard to preserve and take care of our native wildlife are just as deserving and too often over looked.
From VWR's website:
"Each year in Britain an estimated five million wild birds and other animals are injured or disabled in some way. A vast majority of their injuries are caused by people, mostly accidentally, such as road accidents, but some are intentional like poisoning and badger baiting. We at the Vale Wildlife Rescue offer help to thousands of these casualties every year by treating them and where possible release them back in to the wild. We are on call 24 hours a day, every single day of the year."
I know how much it would mean to the team at VWR to receive extra funding. Currently they rely on the goodness of peoples hearts and are completely dependent upon donations and voluntary assistance.0 -
a. National Autistic Society
b. www.nas.org.uk
c. Giving Autistic adults and children a voice
d. Autism and Asperger syndrome are a rapidly increasing hidden disability. Numbers have gone from 1 in 250 several years ago to 1 in 100 today, with some studies suggesting 1 in 79. People who have an autistic spectrum condition have many problems dealing with things a normal person wouldn't look twice at. Support for Children is very slowly getting better although in education there is still a long way to go; support for adults is virtually non-existent. The NAS is campaigning tirelessly to improve the situation of the many thousand sufferers and deserves all the help MSE can offer.
