  • a. The Alzheimers Socoety
    b. http://www.alzheimers.org.uk
    c. The charity that leads the fight against dementia
    d. The alzheimers society is committed to defeating dementia through research. Unlike some of the better known charities it desperatly needs more funds for this 'forgotten' disease. Alzheimers and dementia does not just affect the elderly more and more people in there 40's and 50's are being diagnosed each year - the problem is growing and the cost to our economy of treating dementia is huge, through research a cure could be found. In 2000 my father, aged 59, was diagnosed with a form of dementia called vascular dementia, I wouldnt want anyone else out there to suffer as my lovely dad and our fanily have suffered over the last 8 years. Dad still lives on, now in the last stages of the disease, unable to talk or walk or do anything for himself. It is a cruel disease for all involved. I NEVER wanted to say that i may feel relief at my fathers death but his life is unbearable to see, and i wouldnt want anyone else to have to feel this either. Please support Alzheimers.

  • National Deaf Children's Society
    WWW.NDCS.ORG.UK
Support for deaf children, their parents and families

Our daughter was diagnosed deaf at 18 months and I didn't have a clue about deafness. NDCS provided so much support (emotional and physical) and information relating to all areas of the disability, and have been an invaluable resource to parents and children throughout the country - as well as locally. It covers every form of deafness, from glue ear to cochlear implants. As more children are being diagnosed with new-born hearing screening, its such an important charity for the children of the UK.

  • I would like to nominate 'The Kingswell Centre', Oswestry, Shropshire

    http://www.kingswellcentre.org.uk

Youth and Community centre, supporting vulnerable people.

The Kingswell Centre in Oswestry, Shropshire is a centre which supports a diverse range of people within the local town and Shropshire. We run a credit union, allowing people to save and get low cost loans. We have been involved in many areas of work in the community, supporting people with substance abuse problems, children affected by domestic abuse, pregnancy advice, supporting familes of substance misusers, counselling, working with those excluded from school, youth clubs integrating those with learning dificulties. The last 12 months have been very challenging financially and the project faced closure, we had to make our centre manager redundant and now need to raise funds to re-instate that post to drive the project forward, we already have offers of match funding but need to raise another £15,000. One young lady recently spoke on local radio

I am nominating this as a trustee of the project, who originally started by going to the youth clubs, then volunteering in clubs before becoming a trustee.

    a. Action On Pre-Eclampsia.
    b. http://www.apec.org.uk/.
    c. Action on Pre-eclampsia - Promoting a safer pregnancy.
    d. In its broadest form and including gestational hypertension, pre-eclampsia affects as many as one in 10 of all pregnancies, making it the most common of the serious antenatal complications. It occurs more often in first pregnancies, although a minority of women who have suffered it once get it again in one or more subsequent pregnancies. Pre-eclampsia is usually mild, but one in every 100 first pregnancies is so severely affected that there is a serious risk to the life of the baby – and even the mother. Every year in the UK about 500-600 babies die because of pre-eclampsia. I am currently suffering with this terrible condition,

  • a. DebRA.
    b. http://www.debra.org.uk.
    c. Helps those with the devistating condition Epidermolysis Bullosa.
    d. Epidermolysis Bullosa (EB) is a very rare genetic condition in which the skin and internal body linings blister at the slightest knock or rub, causing painful, open wounds. It is likely to affect 1 in 17,000 live births and it is estimated that there are currently 5,000 people with the condition in the UK. Because EB is an inherited condition (it cannot be caught), which is passed on genetically from parents to children, first time parents often do not know that they are carriers and will have no prior warning that the child will be affected, until birth. DebRA is the only patient support group and medical research charity in the UK working on behalf of people living with EB. Since its establishment in 1978 DEBRA has, thanks entirely to voluntary donations, been able to help people who live with this painful, horrific and disabling condition.
  • I lost my 14 year old son Michael to Meningitis 15 years ago. He was an energetic, lively young man one day and dead the next.
It is a devasting disease which stikes suddenly. In some cases people survive but many are left limbless, deaf or brain damaged. Money is needed for research and the Trust also has an excellent support network which is funded many by donations. Please, please consider them. Thank you!
