If you do decide to go the specialist insurance route (I did - home contents is shared with others and I didn't want to claim against a shared policy if I lost my phone) take a look at this list and write-up on a popular mobile tech site SMSTextNews...
Similar conclusions to Martin, but a more extensive list. Also has a Mobyko review and some more info on Zyb (bought by Vodafone recently), Bluebook and a new service Memova.
I have been a loyal customer of Orange, and Orange Care for 10 years. However, I am due an upgrade, and the phone I want isn't out until at least October, so I'm going to take out a SIM-Only deal (as I can upgrade when my phone comes out). However, Orange say that I can't carry on with Orange Care with these deals.
My phone is now just over 1 year old, and the companies Martin has listed, all seem to only cover new, or nearly new phones.
Are there any good ones that do this? Also I would need to be able to cancel (so no annual contracts)
Many thanks
EDIT: I also checked with my home insurance, and in order to cover the phone it would up my annual premium by £95.

Hi all, my OH has just discovered she has paid for phone insurance for the last 5 months without knowing about it. Vodafone placed it on the bill without asking or talkling to her about it. They have agreed to remove it from future bills, but refuse to refund the money that, in my eyes is theft; it being removed without consent.
Any suggestions on how to proceed?
(I should point out that we are currently in a 6 month long battle with Dolphin following their inability to install a bathroom correctly, so all my energy is directed at that at present, hence asking what appears to be an obvious question).

All sorted, Vodafone returning what was taken - well done customer services.

Hey all..
Been seeking out some insurance for my new contract phone and just come across the barclay card platinum offer of free "gadget insurance" when applying for the card.
Anyone know much about this offer? Ive read T&Cs and cant see any obvious tricks. I am intending to leave the credit card untouched while making use of the free insurance.
Any suggestions?
Cheers
Hey
Just had an unfortunate wake up call from CUSC Foneguard. Had my phone stolen whilst at school (i'm a teacher), but they will not pay up or replace the phone because there was no violence used during the theft. This clause is well hidden in the T&C's. Hagve put an appeal in against the decision but don'y hold out much hope!
I'm after advice on iphone insurance if anyone can help. I'm about to get one but not sure whether to go with O2 or if another company would be better. Any advice welcome.
I also had a policy from CUSC foneguard My daughter had the phone but because she was only age 15 when she lost it - they would not honour the policy - again it was well hidden in the T&C's. We appealed but it didn't work!
I'm thinking about an iPhone and really looking at the cheapest way to own one. Whilst looking for insurance cheaper than o2's £7.50 a month I found that Talkcover can do it for £4.41 a month for an annual policy. (£5.88 pay monthly)

All insurance policies (including your house insurance) will have a clause that states there must be visible signs of forcible entry with regards to theft from a vehicle or premises.

I can't believe that the both of you have said "well hidden in the T&C's" - why on earth would you not read the T&Cs of any insurance you have? It is far too late to discover in the event of a claim that there is something in the T&Cs you were unaware of. You should read through the T&Cs immediately once you receive your policy - no matter how boring.
One thing to remember is that a lot mobile phone insurance excludes theft from a commercial vehicle. We have a Toyota Corolla Verso - it is not a white van - but it is still a commercial vehicle because it's company owned and not privately owned.

I have been looking into insurance for an iphone. Talkcover looks a good deal (£4.41 per month) but in the T&Cs it says...
REPLACEMENT This policy offers replacement only and is not a replacement as new policy. If the electronic equipment cannot be replaced with an identical electronic equipment of the same age and condition, we will replace it with one of comparable specification or the equivalent value taking into account the age and condition of the original electronic equipment.
I can see that this gives Talkcover quite a bit of latitude in terms on what you get as a replacement, but I wonder what it actually means in practice...do most people actually end up with a new Iphone as I guess it would be hard for the company to provide anything else??
Looking at the T&C's for the O2 Premium Package, they have a similar phrase:
If You make a successful Claim, We will wherever possible replace Your Equipment with a model of similar specification – this might be a different model from a different manufacturer.
I suppose it is only by hearing the stories of people who have actually made a successful claim that I'd get the answer! A
Anyone got any ideas or experience of this?

I have just had a response form talkcover as have bought an i phone in the last few days and looking for insurance.
This is the response I received
ll replacement handsets are brand new. If the same make and model of your handset is available at the time of replacement then it will be provided. If the same make and model is no longer available then a brand new replacement handset of equivalent specification and value will be offered in discussion with you.
The Apple iPhone 3G is unusual in that there are currently short term availability problems due to high demand and restricted supply upon it's recent launch in the UK. We have received some stocks of the iPhone 3G, but supply is still sporadic.
If you require a replacement iPhone 3G during a period of restricted supply then you will be offered your choice of; (i) A loan phone until better availability of the iPhone 3G, when you will be provided with a brand new iPhone 3G and asked to return your loan phone, or (ii) The instant supply of a brand new phone of an alternative make.
As soon as stocks are generally available then we will of course be providing a brand new replacement iPhone 3G within 48Hrs for all customers
Today I called O2 with a claim to replace my iphone handset as water damage occured a few weeks back and have not had the chance to sort out until now. They told me on the phone that I could not claim because I did not contact them within the 14 days of the handset not being in use. I found this really astonishing as they only know if the handset is in use if it is turned on. So on thier theory if the handset has been switched off for a few weeks while your on holiday, you come back and damage the phone whilst still turned off then you havent got a leg to stand on. I am still paying the line rental of £50.00 per month and £7.50 per month insurance. I asked for a manager to speak to when on the phone as the person I was dealing with was very unhelpful and just kept saying 'unfortuenatly we can't replace your mobile'. Would you believe that all of the higher personnel go to lunch between 1pm and 2pm leaving the office without any senior bodies? This is a real joke and I am now awaiting a manager to phone me when back from lunch, which I asked when due back, they replied it will be within the next 24hours!! I mean ive heard of long lunches but this is something else. Please could anyone advise on what they would do if in my shoes as I really don't know how to go about this to produce an end result for me. Afterall its costing me £690.00 a year, I need to get something out of it. Thank you
Hi all, I have a Nokia 95 8GB and quotes are all pretty similar between Talk and CUSC. I am going on these as they seem to be Martin's main recommendation, I have never needed insurance before as quite careful, but my work are paying for this insurance as I now have a company phone which I couldn't afford to lose
Anyone have any feelings either way between the two companuies? I must admit I like the site for Talk more - the CUSC one seems old... however CUSC have been going since 1989... silly thing but the price is so close that the small details can sway me... any help much appreciated!
